I know there are pros and cons to having and not having fast travel, but what are your thoughts? Would you like to see it taken out as a whole or kept in?

Its dependent on your playstyle. If you just want to get to areas quickly and do quests then fast travel. No fast travel is best for people who like realism in games, or exploring. I think they should make fast travel like it was in the first two fallouts personally, as it added some risk than the 100% safety guaranteed one.

As someone who has not played the first two Fallout games can you tell me what it was like in those games?

Yes, it should be in.

There are people who enjoy Fast traveling and there are people who don't.  So it should be in for those who enjoy it, and those who prefer to travel manually on foot can do so, ignoring fast travel altogether.

Too often people think their preferences should be applied to everyone else.  Better to have multiple systems that apply to various kinds of players, than to force the mentality of one subset on the others.

Fast travel is a convenience that breaks the atmosphere, I admit, but taking it out completely would just make the game kind of dull after a while. Running for hours, seeing the same stuff you've seen a thousand times.
Some kind of alternative fast travel would be ideal, I think. Much like the car in FO2 that you had to keep supplied with fuel. That would not only give the player the ability to jump around to different parts of the map quickly, but also a sort of attachment to the car (Shadow of the Colossus style).

Fast travel showed you the world map, and you'd click a point on the map and you'd see your dot move toward that point and it could stop midway and you'd be at a random encounter. Unlike the current fast travel system you could travel to any point on the map. However this was the only way to travel from town to town in those games.

It should absolutely stay in, its essential to the game for people who don't want to spend hours walking through the same places over and over, but for those who want to role play or add a challange they should give you an option to disable it, the point is you should always have an option of whether you can do it or not.

They already have that option, its called not using Fast Travel. :p

At no point does a quest or event prompt/force you to use the Fast Travel system. DLC transitions are debatable, but that's understandable considering most of them are in separate cells/areas.

But in terms of general gameplay, anyone who doesn't want to use FT for sake of immersion or challenge or whatever does not have to.

I'd like to see it kept in but only if it was like JIP Fast travel anywhere with random encounters, and it has little restrictions so you don't end up behind a invisible wall or out of the map TongueTril

EDIT: I just downloaded a mod that takes it away and im loving it...but it it should be unavailable if you play hardcore mode. Gummy Bear

I think it should be kept in, just for the fact that if you wanna mess around or just check out a mod you installed you can jump in, fast travel, check it out, and then just quit.
And if you're like me, you usually don't use it when you're actually playing, but the options always there if you just want to mess around.

It should be in every open-world game. Somepeople get impatient and it would be a bit aggravating to have to walk back and forth.

Tesvixen,
I agree but one thing is sure, sometimes people get fatigued or not much time at all to simply walk from one place to another. Simply fast travel breaks the immersion of the game, less-than-fast-travel method would be ideal and a compromise between both types of travel. Look at the motorcycle or cars mod for Fallout, a excellent example that there is demand for something between teleporting to a local or slowly crawling to somewhere.

I guess if there's an option in the menu that allows people to toggle fast travel that'll be great. After all when it comes down to it, it really depends on the player's play style.

Personally for me I'm incredibly impatient so fast travel is a must for me, the only mod regarding fast travel that's still on my list would be the random encounters mod I saw on Skyrim. That mod makes fast travel, waiting and resting a bit dynamic my adding random encounters whenever you breaks away from your gametime. For example when you sleep in a cave you may have your coin stolen; when you fast travel you may have a run-in with bandits etc. I wish there was the same thing in Fallout

I like the immersion of walking place to place. Brings a nice feeling to the game with the right mods.

Fast travel is well needed in my opinion, if you don't have a car mod walking everywhere gets boring and is a drag.

I do agree with Shadowthief, without any form of transportation (besides yourself/character), there should definitely be a fast-travel

I believe Fast Travel is a very nice innovation for people such as myself who do not have 30-40 hours to spend on one play through just to complete the main story. However, on the hardcore setting, I believe Fast Travel should be disabled or at least changed up so you can only travel to main locations (The Strip, Primm, Hoover Dam, etc.). I would like not having a Fast Travel system, but it's better to have one and not use it than not have one and need it!

Whether I use or don't use fast travel depends on how much 'gamer fatigue' I may have at that time. It also depends on if I feel like exploring new areas on my way to or from a mission/objective. It's nice that there is an option...regardless of how often I may or may not use it. So, yeah...it should certainly be included in Fallout games. I do agree with other posters that a hybrid system of some kind would be great...a vehicle of some kind as an alternative to just fast travel (like the horse & cart from Skyrim).

I like to play realistically without fast travel, but with quests that cause you to need to go across the Mojave and back repeatedly are excruciatingly boring, so fast travel is very nice to have. I would like to see a more realistic system implemented in the hardcore mode though that required you to go to a caravan to get a long distance ride, and it would cost you, kind of like carriages in Skyrim.
