So, from what I've gathered, y'won't be havin' t' worry your heads too much over it bein' an MMO. Got reasons 'n' shit fer that, which I'll dole out shortly. Don't make nothin' I'm sayin' anymore reliable, mind you, because we've so little direct information t' go off of, but -- we make do with what we've got. Beyond that, we don't know any form of release date - imagine we'll get somethin' t' that effect on E3, so there's plenty o' time for 'em to change their tune, for better or worse.
Now then:
First, and foremost: Ol' Bethy made that lovely little commitment piece t' 'Save Singleplayer Games' half a year back, or so. Call 'em what you like, but they ain't one t' really back out of their commitments. Find loopholes? Sure, I'd wager 'em doin' that, certainly. Turn tail, though? Nah. Caveat there bein' that there's a first time for anythin'.
I say that t' say this: I don't see them throwin' the core mechanic of a single-player away. Can't say it'll be implemented in the way we all want it to be; got different ideas fer that, afterall - but I don't see 'em throwing their vision of it out.
Segundo: Happened t' find somethin' divin' through a few links, an' a few message boards, and the like. Post from a leaker, claims that, among many other things it won't be an MMO, but will be some sorta 'Multiplayer.' You can see that here:
I know y'all that don't like the buildin' bits'll be grumpy, so here's hopin' they learned t' evoke a more intrinsic and compelling plot 'n' story.
I got my doubts about this source, of course: that comment bout TES don' really fit th' bill fer what's going on, but anything can happen here. Jus' seems their ES efforts'd be focussed primarily on ESO, what with it's "success." Hn.
Dritte: Gotta go on logic (A lil' stringy logic, mind) with this one here, friends. See, Ol' Bethy's a subsidiary o' the greater Zenimax. Normally, that'd matter little... 'Cept, ESO is directly under Zenimax, an' not Bethesda Softworks. This means that Bethesda published it, an' Zenimax developed it; a flip-flop 180 of the usual score -- Or perhaps a bit more'n that, considerin' it's usually developed AND published by Bethy. What I'm gettin' at is this: seems to be that it's a Bethy/Bethy production, which points to no MMO, dig?
Fourth of all: Bethesda has got this penchant fer leavin' little details an' hints in their trailers, an' teasers. Now, I saw one o' my fellow commenters makin' a statement about some possible Borderlands-esque multi-player. Now, if'n you'd mind, take a look at the board game on this here table:
I know this is likely stretchin' it a bit, but since we're all spoutin' speculation, figured I might give some with context. Board game seems t' be some sorta adventure rpg, likely d&d in nature. Five characters on the box art, an' if you can try t' make it out on the side there... Looks almost like it might be sayin' somethin' to the effect o' 1-5 players. Seems that would support a Borderlands-inspired drop-in/out multiplayer system, don't it?
Maybe this is useless information. Maybe a bit o' it's right. We don't rightly know, an' we won't for some time - as I don't see Todd givin' out all the secrets, especially if'n it's not even a 'This Year' thing. However, in my mind, all that works t'gether t' provide a bit of a clearer image on what t' expect.

If this was to happen. Obese 40 year olds will flash their man boobs while the crowd produces a girly scream with someone in the background saying "I want to have your babies!".
Sadly a new elder scrolls game is still ways off as stated by Todd Howard and Pete Hines. They still have 3(?) unreleased AAA games before ES 6 and I vaguely remember there being an interview with Todd Howard where he says they are working on their engine that would allow them to do more complex animations(will cite this once I find the video).
So they have to work on their game engine first before they even begin development on a new Elder Scrolls game plus the other AAA games that they promised to release .

must say that im sceptical towards the kotaku article, i will wait until E3 to make a judgement. Now everyone is just "screaming" the same without any proof. Unless beth makes a statement we will have to wait for E3 to know for sure. We have seen all kinds of rumors these last years and so many have been proven false, so nothing is certain yet.

Gonna reserver my judgement until E3, but it would be cool if it had optional coop, would love to play it with mods.

If this info is true then I will be very happy. Co op is fine and it would be fun to play with friends every now and then. As long as its like Borderlands co op system where you can still play single player then FO 76 can be really good. Also I never thought of the board game like that, very smart. Great post

I thought, once upon a time, that I was going to love Dayz -- the "excitement" of encountering new players. The other players ended up axe-wielding nuissances chopping the air as they charged me like a well-dressed zombie. Or someone with a rifle sniping newbies on the beach. The addition of other players, in place of a plot, holds no interest to me in fallout. I'd rather see fallout 4's plot over "Heavily armed BOS players sniping newbie raider players on the beach," day-z style. I'll be saddened if the modern fallout player base ends up actually preferring this mindless whacking of each other to the single player plot style of game. The addition of base building? We already have that in fallout 4. The base-building in star wars galaxies was just an eye-sore on the terrain, if I recall. I hated seeing the world turned into endless empty buildings. And as a multiplayer game, it probably won't be heavily moddable. And are many peolpe satisfied with an unmodded bethesda game these days? I don't play unmodded bethesda games, they're unfinished.

Looks like this could be set in West Virginia. What is in that location(not an American)?
A quick google search shows that it has coal and tourist industry.
Welp, looks like my guess that they'd be pushing for even more patriotic propaganda americana will be accurate.
Christ, "Reclamation Day". They're not even attempting subtlety. Ugh.

A lot of people really hate the idea of a rust clone, but I think it could be cool as long as there's a story and it isn't an MMO. The idea of going out into the wasteland, building your own faction, killing NPCs and players alike with friends is something that has me hooked. Sure, it's no New Vegas type of game but realistically would we ever get that? Hype really kills expectations and likely and spin-off Fallout would have disappointed most people, even if it was made by Obsidian. There is a lot of potential here, I just hope Bethesda doesn't fuck it up.

I´m quite worried, if the rumors turn out to be true. Single-Player Games that have a Multiplayer Option forced into the mix always suffer from it. It just siphons off some of the time, effort and attention to detail that could have been put into making a great Single-Player Experience. Isn´t there a Battlefield Part 571,5 for the Multiplayer-Fans? Let us have Fallout!

I guess a multiplayer game with fallout skins and terminology would be successful, and that's why they're doing it. But I doubt it will be anything other than that, a game that looks like fallout. I don't see how the things that make it special could exist in multi-player. I'd love to be wrong, but I don't see Bethesda innovating something amazing and new here.

Honestly, if it's an actual Fallout game with optional co-op, I would fine with that. Playing and exploring Morrowind (the actual game, not the ESO expansion) with my friends was a really fun experience. We became daedra worshipers and would try and convince other people to convert, then take them to a daedric ruin for their "trials". You couldn't take anyone's stuff if they died, but it was fun to watch a newbie run around in their undies trying to fight scamps.
My friend that I mainly play with, and I aren't exactly excited for this. In fact I zero expectations for this game. But we were talking about things that would be cool to do. Like become hunters, or even witcher style mutant hunters. Obviously we have no idea if anything like this will be possible (probably not) but it's cool to at least think about.
Fallout Online Reloaded, is pretty fun as well. If you don't know that is, it's essentially the Fallout 1&2 world but in an MMO-ish fashion. There's not really any crazy quests to go on, last I checked, but if you just wanted to roleplay with a friend in the fallout universe for a few hours, it's pretty fun. We made business of going around to the different towns and settlements and shoveling brahmin dung. It's more profitable than you'd think.
But to finish up here, I again have no expectations for this. But I am willing to give this a try and wait til E3 to see what it's really all about. Maybe we'll all be pleasantly surprised, or maybe we'll all try and throw stuff at Todd Howard on stage, even through our screens at home. We'll just have to wait and see.

@rooxcz I'm going to have to call bullshit on that leak, Bethesda said there would be two more new IPs before TES6, so I really doubt there would be a new title announced this year, it's years away.

I definitely think Fallout should remain a single player campaign or at most a coop survival. I'd even take something like saints row. it's a single-player game but you can have one other person drop in if you like and mods can still be added into your game and theirs for a cool modded online experience, but no more than that due to how many mods that wouldn't work with an MMO, all the quest mods that wouldn't work, on top of that, even if they somehow allowed mods, that means no weapon mods reasons being, some people like to create and have Op guns. sooooo even if they some how allowed mods, they then run the risk of people overpowering their own whole existence. If Fallout 76 turns out to be an MMO then it's getting 86 and I'll be sticking to Fallout New Vegas until something better comes along because Fallout 4 was not to my liking.

No mods..not interested. Also looks like it runs off the FO4 engine with probably little to no improvement so it's not looking good so far.

I completely understand everyone being worried that 76 is going to be a massive departure from the standard fallout we all know and love. I personally hope that it isn't an MMO or anything that requires online constantly as I feel that is going to hurt the fanbase immensely.
HOWEVER, lets all take the rumors and statements from Kotaku with a grain of salt and just wait for the reveal during E3. I get that the guy has insider knowledge that he is getting his leaks from and he has been accurate before, but just because a psychic guesses a car is in the driveway doesn't mean you're guaranteed to have the keys, you know? All I'm saying is I am going to wait for the official reveal before I tear apart a game that I haven't even seen gameplay of yet to base a true opinion off of.
Plus, there are not enough good co-op games and if Fallout 76 takes the co-op story approach then I am 100% behind it as long as it is optional and doesn't kill the immersion or replayability. Something akin to Borderlands or Farcry 5 would be amazing in Fallout.

i don't think it's going to be multiplayer or anything like that dont believe everything that comes out unless it's from bethesda themselves judging by this trailer
