So i was looking around on the internet for info on Fallout 4, and i came across a video talking about how Todd Howard has officially announced that mods are indeed coming out on Xbox One, and he is trying to get them on to the PS4 as well - do you think this is a good idea? And where do you think you'll be able to get the mods from?

I'm more than happy for consoles to receive the modding delights that the PC has solely soaked in for the last...forever.... despite my lack of a next gen console, or any console for that matter.

Mods created on PC will also work on XB1, but the modding tools will still be on PC.

And no, I don't think it is a good idea. Modding is a big part of what keeps PC gaming relevant/exciting.

It's nice they will be getting mods, but could Sony and Microsoft see this as a way to make a quick buck? Maybe get some exclusive mods only for PS4 or Xbox (I doubt it, just a thought) and As Tex said mods are a unique PC selling point, so I wonder how this would affect sales on PC, because people might be looking for an excuse to play on their consoles.

I haven't seen this anywhere, can somebody link me a source? I can't imagine how this'd even work, honestly. Consoles are so... weak and puny compared to PCs. I'm sure some simple mods would work, but a fully modded Skyrim install for instance would never even begin to run on even a brand new console. I'm not PC Master Race enough that I hate the idea of the filthy console peasants getting mods, I'm just baffled as to how it'll actually work.

I don't think Modding on the Consoles will have that much of an impact on PC gaming. Consoles are capped when it comes to technical power. Which means that there'll likely be an even smaller load order for them, I can't see consoles going over a hundred mods, let alone the more graphic intensive ones.

Maybe a hundred simple single-weapon mods, but the memory limits on consoles have always been a huge limiting factor. There's only so much they can take after all. I'm sure they'd be ok with mods that mostly use vanilla stuff, or simple quest mods and new models and the like, but new scripted features and such I'm going to guess is going to be a no-go. I'm reasonably confident that something like FOSE, NVSE, or SKSE will ever be possible on consoles, and those are a hard requirement for huge numbers of the best mods around.

It was announced by Todd Howard during the Bethesda E3 show, Skynet. He also emphasized that mods will be free.

I must have missed that part or something, but I was watching it live. Odd. I'll have to go back and check it out later. Good that he said free though.

PostSubject: Re: Modding on consoles!?   Modding on consoles!? EmptyTue Jun 16, 2015 5:52 pm

I agree with @Tesvixen. Moreover I think its a great evil for the modders.

The major developers are desperately trying to kill the modding as a concept, because it is the last line of defence for PC games development to become commercially unprofitable. The great part of gamers who prefer to buy games on PC then on a console having the possibility to do either are the folks who love mods (especially now, when the new generation consoles have approached top PC performance).

There's another thing why the majors are trying to kill the modding community - by creating great mods equal or even greater by quality than the work of developers modders keep them from making more money on DLC. And now DLC is the great part of game market, so the companies will fight for it desperately.

In my opinion the attempts of Steam mod sale and mods for consoles are consistent steps on killing the modders community.

But this is only my opinion :-)

The Steam mod selling fiasco was bad, I agree. But modding on consoles? I don't see anything wrong with that. It's not like modding on consoles will make modding on PC any worse, and modding on PC will easily remain superior to that of the consoles due to stuff like the script extenders and the level of power PCs enjoy over consoles.

The mods that are console compatible will probably uploaded to the new website they announced, and via some console interface they can download the mod from there

I can only see armor and weapon mods working, and not amazing quality ones either. The consoles would lag to high hell.

I'm sort of curious to see how it plays out. The concept itself sounds fairly simple, but I'm sort of confused about a few things. When they say "modding", do they mean simply uploading a town you built? If that is indeed what they mean, I think the concept of uploading them to share would be sort of useless. Why download a town or home when you could do it yourself?

I guess time will tell. I'm excited to see what we're in store for.

I don't think all mods will be available to consoles. I think only simple map mods and stuff like Snapmap sharing(DOOM Presentation) with no custom contents. To think an Xbox One would run all the texture mods and script heavy mods is unlikely closed eyes smile. Maybe you could build your houses and then share that house design, or a gun style you crafted.... etc simple stuff like that.

Here's a simple answer: the "mod store" comes with a warning that there's no guarantee the mods will run well on your console, and there's an easy to use menu to deactivate any mods you find don't work well. That way, you get to experiment and find whatever mods work for you, which is actually what PC gamers have been doing forever.

I also will quote this.
''Keep in mind, console gamers will probably only have access to mods made using Bethesda's modding tools, not ones that actually alter the game's code.''

Wait, Do you actually have to pay for mods for Fallout 4?, Or is it just like Workshop? (The free Workshop, anyway...)

That seems more likely to me. People's custom built towns are way more feasible than actual mods are.

@Sierran, no you won't have to pay for mods. They specifically stated that mods will be free.

If a PS4/XB1 can even stomach the load orders of what I use for FONV or what people use for Skyrim I would be shocked. It would crap itself out before you probably go a chance to enjoy playing.

Now to factor in a next-gen game AND system intensive mods, that sounds like it wouldn't even have a shot. The FO4 presentation was cool for the ability to create personalized interiors and exteriors, along with the weapons crafting system as well.

But that is not all modding is about, as stated earlier a script extender would be needed for a lot of the mods a PC could handle and run, and texture packs would be a challenge without things like the 4GB extender and the stutter remover, for example.

I'll believe it when I see either console processing ENB's, 2K+ texture packs, 4k armors, High poly character models and so much more all at once without lagging or choking.

Hell most consoles can't even run games above 30 fps at 1080p, some can't even go to 1080p. That's why you always hear the console peasants always whining about how "the human eye can't see more than 25 frames" or some nonsense like that.
