I walked into a raider ambush in the DC wasteland and got pinned down by sniper fire while others rushed me with pistols and knifes i took them down with my ak and ran around to flank the sniper dispatching him with a headshot and claiming the rifle for my own.

Not bad, did you happen to face these guys on a bridge or close to one of the D.C wasteland bridges? I know there is a particular place in D.C where they tend to do that a lot and respawn if memory serves me right.

Today in Fallout I got Katja murdered on the way to Mariposa, after I accidentally lost the tape to the main door. I killed the priest chick at the Cathedral and everyone else, who piled up on top of her. Can't get the key to open the door to get the electronic lockpick to get into Mariposa.

Tldr; The Master wins, I have to wait 13 years staring at his locked front door until super mutants take over everything.

Looks like my fate is locked in, I'm not picking my way out of this one.
