I feel I'm pretty well knowledgeable of the fallout lore so lets talk about it, if you wanna learn something or if you know something most people don't, here you can share! We can cover any fallout game, Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Fallout tactics isn't cannon but we can still talk about it, Fallout brotherhood also isn't cannon but interesting nonetheless, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, and finally Fallout 4. let the lore unfold!

I've always been curious, how was the Children of Atom created? I know in Fallout 3 they were worshiping an atom bomb but that's all I know.

How big is the spreading of the Brotherhood on apocalyptic America?

As far as what we currently known, there wasn't any source indicate who got kicked in the head and created this wacky cult. It's interesting because not even the cult in Fallout 4 mentioned capital wasteland. For possibility goes the cult could even not be originated in Megaton, Boston or Far Harbour

But it's called a "local cult" in FO3, so it could be born with Megaton (they were here as the same time the town was constructed).
Also, on the wiki, "A small group of Megaton's Atom followers were directed by Confessor Cromwell to travel north, they settled on The Island on Maine. Eventually taking up a stronghold in the old Submarine base, thus creating the Far Harbor branch of followers." is written.

Fallout as a whole contains all types of kooky cults from hubology (a spoof of Scientology from fallout 1, 2, fallout 4 nuka world), children of the cathederal (fallout 1), the followers of the apocalypse ( fallout 1, new Vegas) and finally the children of atom. But all these cults had vastly different agendas some meant to accomplish good and learn, some wanted to extinguish the human race,a and some wanted to trick you into taking your caps but the children of atom are special because they are one of the only true religions left in fallout (that is openly practiced) it is safe to assume that confessor cromwell started the practice of this religion in fallout 3 or maybe his predecessor started it we don't really know. But what we do know is that this religions influence in the post apocalyptic america is felt all along the east coast (atleast, maybe its also present in California but we don't know since the last game to take place there was fallout 2) from the capital wasteland to the commonwealth of Massachusetts which pales in comparison of the influence that hubology had which can be seen in fallout 1 in the hub and later in nuka world. Which tells us that the children of atom is a relatively new religion in history of america. hubology lasting from roughly the year 2159 or 2158 to the year 2287, that's roughly 128 years but through fallout 1 and 4 we find out hubology predates the war created by a man named dick hubbell to rip people off. now compare that 210+ years to the children of atoms 10+ years and you wonder why they don't show up as much as the children do. So the real question is how come hubology isnt the most prolific religion in america

The brotherhood is probably my favorite faction in any game because of their history and depth. their reach is originating pre war from the mariposa military base in california and making the trek by foot to hidden hills. If you dont know their origin they used to be a privatised military security group led by a friend of Roger Maxon. Upon learning the true nature of the mariposa base they held the scientists there prisoner and called the government of the united states to await further orders. but didnt get any response because unbenounced to them the world was cover in eternal hellfire. upon this realisation the leader commited suicide and left Maxon in charge. Since then Their presence has been known from california to vegas to chicago to texas to washington and massachusetts and beyond.

Technically Fallout: Tactics is semi-canon. Caesar mentions capturing Brotherhood scouts in the east. As far as I'm aware, Legion scouts haven't made it to the east coast, so he's most probably referring to the Midwestern Brotherhood.
Plus, the Brotherhood having the capabilities to travel to DC makes a lot more sense if Tactics is at least semi-canon. It's implied that they're basically irrelevant in Fallout 2 whereas Tactics kinda retconned that.

@"Visible Earth" well in the fallout lore tactics isnt cannon at all because in that game skynet takes over the world with terminators but I see what you mean brotherhood has always had the abilitly to traverse the country with vertibirds and airships and blimps since fallout 2 and in tactics they used the setting of chicago brotherhood to tell a story that isnt cannon but the brotherhood is in chicago its just that there were never officially mass murdering robots who fought the brotherhood

I remember that in New Vegas, there is some references to Chicago. So it's a bit canon.

The minutemen faction need more lore and detail, because basically it just, "potrect the people at a mintues notice" "we defended diamond city from the mutants" "massacre by gunners" "you are now general". WTF how should you be deserving of beoming the general of the minuteman. Their should be a process, where preston decides that he seems to be a more loyal leader and places you under a low rank. When helping out settlements, Minuteman should occupy the areas or you have the ability to send a squad of mintueman to complete the mission and their a chance of then succeding or failing. You shouldn't be getting money from the settlers. Where does it come from? how do they earn it? lots of things that don't add up. You should be earning a certain prize as you 'climb the ranks' of the minuteman and every rank recieves a higher reward. weapons, armor, aid items and more. Anyway, this is a bit off topic, but i am interested to see more knwoledge of the minuteman

For a group that almost got destroyed the Minuteman isn't really lack of lore. There are numerous places for you to discover how the ex-minuteman ended up turning raider or gunner, killed by ferals. It certainly pales in character when compared with the other 3 factions though, I wish they'd add more non-radiant quests.

@Garska Thank you for this map. It is very very very informative and honestly I could spend hours studying it.
In regards to the lore of fallout 1 and 2, is it true that those games are not cannon? I was aware that fallout tactics and fallout BoS were not canon. What aspects of Fallout 1 and 2 are not canon? Would it be the origin of the BoS or how the NCR was founded? I know FNV is canon and the game does make references to the past.
Also does anyone know of Fallout Van Buran? I know that it was going to be Fallout 3 but was radically changed. I have always been interested in the lore of that game. It is too bad that the game won't see the light of day.

Retcon Raider over on YouTube has made some really great break downs of the Van Buren design documents.
Van Buren Playlist
Fallout Bible Download (Includes lots of good lore bits written by Chris Avellone, it's considered non-canon at this point but still an interesting read if your into the classic games)

@stoobygacks Fallout 1 & 2 are 100% canon, you even heard about the Chosen One's son in New Vegas (who is hunting the musician who is hidden in Novac)
