Hey guys, I'm looking for some good book recommendations. I used to love to read, but with being in college these last five years, reading textbooks has really pushed me away from wanting or enjoying a book these days.
I really want to get back into reading, do you guys have any recommendations of a book or series that will draw me back in?
I'm not picky about the genre, but I am partial to sci-fi over fantasy.
Thanks.<3

Uh hey,if you like sci-fi and are into the star wars universe ( i know this sounds super nerdy and all) but try picking up the republic commando series,There very well written and i thoroughly enjoy the 3 i have read.
other then that i don't really have much for you besides the books i have read for school lol

@Kayloo I definitely recommend you Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island". This book is my favourite, i've read it many times, and will read until i die.

Also, Stephen Hunter's "Point of Impact". Its veeery cool book, full of intrigues and weapon technic information. In other words, Tom Clancy's style gun-porn novel.

Also, i want to buy Philipp Dick's "Do androids dream of electric sheep?" but can't find it on russian localization Sad
I watched Blade Runner movie for a dozen of times, and its my favourite, i'm sure, the book is much better than movie adaptation, so, that's all for now Smile

P.S. You should try to read "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" by Nietzsche. Funny thing Smile

@"ObtainedDust" I'm actually considering this, I read a lot of the expanded universe books in high school, they were good.

I haven't read much books lately for the same reason, as I'm also studying, but I did read a quite recent science-fiction release some time ago called The Quantum Thief. It was very good in both my and the reviews' opinions.

Here's how I'd shortly review and describe it without spoiling the story:

@"Kayloo"

One of the sci-fi classics that I would recommend is Roadside Picnic. The Russian movie Stalker was loosely based on it, and so was the first Stalker game, Shadow of Chernobyl.

A particular favorite book of mine would be the novel Jam, written by one Ben "Yatzhee" Crowshaw that those of you who watch his series of Zero Punctuation videos on YouTube would be familiar with. The book is something of a dark comedy set in the apocalypse that no one could have predicted: The sudden appearance of a carnivorous strawberry jam that consumes all organically matter. There's plenty of laughs be had with one with plenty of interesting writing in a unique setting. If you're into a bit of dark humor (especially Australian), I say give it a go.

Ready Player One

the themes in it are awesome. and it has strong similes, symbolism, and it has plenty of easter eggs too.
personally i think the book plays out like a videogame; a fps like bioshock. the narrative is through the eyes of of the protagonist Wade Watts/3 or his Nom De Guerre he goes by Parzival, but it is spoken in first person so his words are your words. It puts you in his shoes basically just like a Bioshock puts you in the shoes of Jack. so it ironically feels like a video game in itself. the adventure is long and grand. it has strong character developement and Wade/ Parzival is a fallible character, which is great because i dont like it when characters are too perfect. Wade definitely feels human and relatable. One of the themes is one im sure everyone these days is familiar with and that is infatuation with someone youve only seen and spoken to online. The book also has a great sense of humor
TLDR
its Dystopian, Technological, High Fantasy, Adventure, emotional

if youre a hardcore gamer and a regular on the internet youre bound to love it

~i have a pdf copy i dont mind sharing

Oh man... I've got a library sitting in the other room... Lets see, if you like Sci-fi more then anything else, the Publisher BAEN puts out alot of really good books, just read the Undercity by Catherine Asaro, would recommend that. Then the Hammer's Slammers series by David Drake is a really good Future tank series... Another book that I went though a year or so back that I still loved and wish he had made more was Ragnarok by Patrick A. Vanner, That's about earth on the losing side of a interstellar contact war. And of course, the Warhammer and Battletech series are always good to fall back on, years upon years of lore.

But if your looking for more of a pick up and read book that's post apocalyptic, I highly recommend the Deathlands series... you can pick the series up with any book and not be overwhelmed or lost.

If you want to know anymore series, I can unearth the rest of the collection

My recommended book if you like Sci-Fi would be Peace And War: The Omnibus Edition/Forever Peace, Forever Free, Forever War (GOLLANCZ S.F.) as the series in a whole is a great read as it is about -

FOREVER WAR
William Mandella is a reluctant hero, fighting in a distant interstellar war against unknowable and unconquerable aliens. But his greatest test will be returning to Earth. A few months of his tour of duty equate to centuries on his homeworld, during which he becomes increasingly isolated from the world he has been fighting to protect.

FOREVER FREE
Mandella returns home for the last time - to find humanity has evolved into a group conciousness which excludes him. Alone, alienated and missing the certainties of combat, he and his fellow verterans search for an escape - and finally look towards space.

FOREVER PEACE
A war is raging, fought by indestructible machines operated remotely by soldiers miles away - and for soldiers like Julian Class, war is truly hell. So when he and his companion, Dr Amelia Harding, uncover something which could take the universe back to square one, the prospect isn't so much terrifying, as terrifyingly tempting... And it is pretty big so it will occupy you a while hopefully, it also has a good point about some subjects that I will not spoil for you so that you still have something to read in the book that is not spoiled for you.

Metro 2033 and Metro 2034 by Dmitry Glukhovsky are pretty good.
It's set in russia after a Fallout-style apocalypse and gets pretty weird at times.

Not sure if Halo is your cup of tea, but I'd recommend: Fall of Reach, The Flood, First Strike and Ghosts of Onyx, I've got all 4 of those and really enjoy reading them.

one of my favorite books is
The Alchemist

the setting is spain to egypt around the 18th or 19th century.
its about a boy who follows his dreams in search for treasure
he gets side tracked by life and love.

Haven't read many sci-fi novels but I can definitely recommend the Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks.

I don't read Fantasy unless it's recommended to me and that was probably the best set of novels anyone ever told me to read.

Nueromancer by William Gibson is a classic cyberpunk novel. It was written in 1984 so some things might be a little outdated but it's still a worthwile read I believe.
