| Hello GUNners and GUNnettes! I hope you have noticed all the amazing mods we have to offer. A lot of the review videos or screenshots which attracted you here may show some mods you won't find on the first search of the forums. The majority of the mods here are now public downloads, meaning anyone can register and have immediate access to most and some of the very best mods on this site. However, *The following is No Longer Valid. We don't have a Private section anymore. Thank you all for ignoring the rest of this post.*CERTAIN MOD AUTHORS HAVE REQUESTED A PRIVATE SUBFORUM FOR CERTAIN RELEASES.
MOD AUTHORS ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO CHOOSE WHETHER THEIR MODS SHOULD BE PUBLIC OR PRIVATE. IT'S ENTIRELY THEIR CHOICE TO DO SO. RESPECT IT.
THE SITE STAFF DOES NOT DECIDE WHICH MODS ARE PUBLIC OR PRIVATE, BUT ONLY PROVIDES THE SAFE SPACE THAT WAS REQUESTED FROM THEM.
SHOULD WE NOT HAVE A PRIVATE SECTION, THESE MOD AUTHORS WOULD GO TO A SITE THAT HAS ONE!*No Longer Valid. We don't have a Private section anymore. Thank you all for ignoring the rest of this post.*Make no mistake: should the private section be dismantled/removed, the private mods would not suddenly become public, and most future private mods would not be released at all, or if they would, it would be far later than it would've been through the private section, because it often functions as a closed beta area for upcoming public releases. Okay?
So, with that out of the way, you can understand how the few "exclusive" mods that mod authors have posted in the "exclusive" sections are offered access to as a sort of perk for people who've earned it, by contributing to the community. Contributing how? Easily! That can mean feedback on the mods you download, helping someone with a problem if you know the answer, or just finding a discussion about something you like and adding to it. Be an active, valuable member of the site, and you will earn our trust and with it, full access, in time.
Why don't we allow access to everyone? The mod authors asked us to give them that choice.
Who do we allow access to? We give it to people who bother being involved in the community because that encourages members to give real feedback and that encourages modders to keep modding and to improve their work. It also gives a safe place for modders whose mods were stolen before and it keeps some modders safe from infringement liability.
I'll also allow @dragbody to explain it in his own way: - dragbody wrote:
- There are a few reasons. Let me explain...
1. We want to protect the mod authors from dishonest users. Bandwidth leeching is not an issue anymore; however, mod leaking is.
2. The GUNetwork has always been about the community and friendship. Anonymous users soaking up our mods and never saying thanks or sharing a screenshot of the mods in action aren't who we want to be part of a community with.
3. We also need to protect the CONTENT of the mods. It's no secret that our mods frequently use ported content. As a result, there is a need to ensure our members are responsible people who will respect the fact that even the modders don't really "own" the mods. Thus the approval process is our way of screening users to help us share the mods in a controlled manner.
I think this pretty well sums it up. We want everyone to get approval so we can all maximize our modding fun! But it's up to the individual users to determine if that happens. If you're still not convinced, read my more elaborate response here:- Warning:
We at GUNetwork get nothing material out of it, as I've said before there's no revenue. No ads, no donations, no premium accounts, not even a cash account to wire any kind of money to. All we gain are friends, and that inspires creative modders to do more and better for each other. It's not a download hub, it's a community. We form great relationships between modders and members and that's all we've ever wanted. We encourage proper feedback, moral support, screenshots of the mods (we always welcome screenshots and we organize screenshot contests all the time). But most of all we have a good relationship with the members. We discourage and dismiss ass-kissing and half-assed "good work" or dishonest/shallow comments. We encourage real feedback, participation, community engagement and creativity.
Most of, and some of the best of our mods are public. Some, however, are kept for those particular members who are particularly involved in the community. It's also a safe haven for those who want to release their hard worked mods in a trusting environment, and it's a way to avoid copyright suits since we don't distribute those specific ported packs openly. Any court would throw out any infringement case distributed in a closed circuit. Other times, the system is encouraging for modders who find a stable control group for their special releases, and then gain enough swing in their pitch to make even better public releases. That "swing" is gained from real feedback, from a sense of control that they gain (which assholes who steal these mods are destroying btw, damaging the modder's confidence and implicitly their willingness to share their work at all). Real feedback is always encouraged, in contrast to constant, unsubstantiated bitching and discontent as one would often find on other sites.
If you find a bug, report it in a civilized manner. If you have a suggestion for improvement, propose it in a polite, well put-together and well researched manner, and be ready to put in some work to make it happen.
See, we've noticed these shortcomings of large leeching download hubs and we built a community to prevent them. And the fact that people are stealing these mods and putting them in other places discourage overall modding and that affects you implicitly. Many of our highest valued modders have not released their best mods because they saw these leprous mod thieves claiming all credit for their own hard work. Others have quit modding altogether because of having their mods stolen in this manner, which also means they don't get to make many potentially public mods, as they would have, which all of us might have enjoyed. This is where mod thieves are damaging their own interests, shooting themselves in the collective foot of the entire user base. I've seen many potential WIP mods that have never been released because of mod stealing. I'm trying to give them a safe release area to allow those modders to remain active and creative, and to grow towards public releases, and people leaking our exclusive mods are shitting all over that. So the whole modding scene (modders and users alike) are losing because of these self-entitled thieves, and it discourages discourse between modders and the user base, their feedback, participation, which in any other domain of human activity are considered preferable to have.
We're not talking about an inability to afford payment on something, we're talking about laziness and self-entitlement. These mods were made for people who reciprocate, cooperate, participate, who help the process of creation by moral support, and that enhances productivity. Most of our members don't feel forced to stay active, but find a genuine community to participate in, to remain in, a creative output and outlet. It's about encouraging the modders for more and for better, and the users to be engaged with them and participate in the creative process more. Now, to gain said access to the private mods that our talented modders release you'll have to be admitted to one of the following groups:
Your best and safest bet is to go for Colonials To become a Colonial, you'll have to earn our TRUST and RESPECT. Convince us you're a decent community member. Socialize with the modders, with other members, make friends, get comfortable. Be active and, if possible, productive. To start off, you may attempt to:1. Make a consistent amount of non-spam posts:
- a consistent introduction could make up for 5 posts (allowing people to get to know and understand you) - good, consistent replies which enrich an existing topic will also be appreciated more so than 5 or 10 shallow posts, based on the "quality over quantity" principle. - posting screenshots or videos is advisable, but not necessary. They represent content, and content is encouraged. 2. Be a decent human being, without a history of leaking other ppl's mods or products without permission and without acting like a self-entitled prick.
Demotions and repromotions:
The demotions intervenes every 13th of the month, this sanctions the members who have reached the rank of Colonial and who visit the site, but who do not post anymore and the fact become lurkers. This comes after 3 months visit without writing a post.
Because if a member has time to download a mod, he has time to make a post.
We have enough different categories outside the mods (screenshots, sports, car, music ....) to participate in the community by leaving a post.
However, if a member no longer visits the site because he does not have the time, he keeps his rank unlimited.
The repromotions are exactly the same as a promotion but are intended for members who have lost their rank of Colonial and who decided, by increasing their activity on the site, to regain their rank.
3. Be mindful of the Rules & Guidelines about how this forum functions. Some of you are already Veterans and know very well what that means. For those of you who just registered, Veterans are members of the Old VGUnetwork (2009-2013) who have been very active and valuable there, who we remember very well and who have stuck with us through thick and thin. They're literally <Veteran> members, we have a long history together and they should be regarded as OG (Original GUNners) If you believe you deserve the rank of Veteran, apply to the group and we'll take it in consideration. Possible outcomes to that: 1. most of us are gonna say "Oh right! I know him/her! He/she used to post a lot and was a nice guy/gal!"in which case you're set and promoted. This is the case with most current Veterans. 2. some of us say "Sounds familiar! I think she/he was around! Not sure how active, though, it's very vague. We should wait for him/her to post some more"OR one of us could say "oh I remember him/her well!" while others would say "no, I don't recall seeing them"which is the case for most people who already applied but weren't promoted yet. 3. most of us would say "I don't really remember him/her. maybe they should go for Colonial instead" which is the situation for... well... not sure. but could be. Veterans still should be active, but a bit more leeway is granted in lieu of their past activity on the old site. Ergo, it's a weird complicated system Now I must beg of you: DO NOT be kiss-asses! Don't try to suck up past your promotion. But don't be a prick, be benevolent, open and interactive. Be honest, decent and post lots of pictures
Don't aim for Paladin. Only very few remarkable (near legendary) modders and the highest esteemed old VGU members will be awarded this rank. If you're registered to the site, we probably already know and have promoted you on the spot. If you went under our radar, feel free to message me, asking about it, but it'll save us both an awkward conversation if you just post on the forums and allow us to pick up on your presence first. Paladins are the most renown and accomplished members of the modding scene and those who have been great, loyal friends of the community.
However, if your current and future activity, as well as fantastic mod releases, stand out among the rest like a blinding beacon of light, we will nominate you to this member group when we consider it appropriate.
For Sentinel & Overseer you have to have forum managing experience or honest willingness, free time and a good reputation. There's a greater chance you become Sentinel before Overseer, but just so it's clear, anybody can strive to become Staff. It's an administrative position, so it comes with a lot of responsibility but with a few perks too. Applications will be considered. Sentinels go through a 2 week trial period after which they may be asked to step down.
I hope this is sufficiently explained, as a preliminary breakdown. Other additions or changes will be posted and updated here.More details on Procedure:
You don't really get to apply for promotion, you'll be nominated.
You may ask Staff if you've been nominated, and how the votes are going, but there's no application necessary on your part, other than being active on the forums.
Only Overseers and Paladins nominate members for Promotion. DO NOT bother Paladins to nominate you, you may be banned. You may, however, ask an Overseer or Sentinel about your status, but don't be annoying and don't be an ass kisser.
Only Overseers, Sentinels and Paladins vote for or against members nominated for Promotion. Each vote has the same value.
Do not offer money for promotion. We neither have the interest, nor the means to accept donations.
Do not beg for their favor, do not be needy and exasperating. Earn your status like an intelligent adult, not like a leech. A proper activity and patience will always be rewarded. Show trust and respect and we'll reciprocate Types of Votes NO when the member hasn't earned promotion. YES when the member has earned promotion. WAIT when the member has potential, but hasn't quite earned it yet- I've included all the current Member Groups here for quick reference:
Default groups:Initiate - 1-29 posts.Survivor - 30-99 postsEstablished - 100-499 postsParagon - 500-1999 postsHotliners - 2000-... postsSpecial groups:Colonial - for well reputed active members of the GUNetVeteran - for well known active members of the original VGU communityPurple Hearts - for members of Valor, with significant contributions to the communityPaladin - for exceptionally productive and active members, as well as for legends of the mod showroomsStaff team:Overseer - Primary staffSentinel - Secondary staffGFX Specialist - Site design staff Nominations may be for: Colonial, Veteran, Purple Hearts, Chatbox Moderator, Sentinel, Overseer, Paladin or Demotion from any of those ranks.
For GFX Specialists they will be voted on by the Graphic Effects Team in their Head-Quarters here, by a similar but more simplified process: https://www.gunetwork.org/t5634-gfx-specialists-hqEvery nomination has to be motivated. Every time we nominate somebody we note our impressions and a direct link to their posts or simply by tagging them. So a nomination would look like this:@UserExample <https://www.gunetwork.org/spa/UserExample> Colonial. Mostly decent activity. Had some short posts in the beginning but he improved content after a while. Has been friendly, helpful and mindful of the rules.Demotions and Overseer Nominations have to reach 5 votes of the same kind to finalize. All other Nominations only need 3 votes of the same kind to pass through. Once at least 3 (or 5) votes are met in the member's favor, there will be a 48 hour Pending Period in which anyone who hasn't voted can formulate objections, and those who've voted can change their vote based on proper justification. If no objections arise within the given time, the Nomination will be executed and announced here.
I trust this is pretty straight-forward. If you've wondered how things work, this is it. For any other questions, address them here. Any topics created about this in the future will be redirected here and locked.
Thank you for being part of the Gaming Underground Network! G.U.Network - Come for the Mods, Stay for the Community!< EDIT: The old topic has reached (and passed) its limit again. This is a new topic, a fresh start! >

| Um... goody goody new thread... Best wishes to those who wish to work towards being promoted. It is really easy to do. Simple post in the welcome thread, some thank you post for a mod that you liked (also some screen captures of the mod in action is greatly appreciated) and / or some support post and you would be well on your way. Maintenance of the promotion is easy as well. I just did that Posting here! Just make a few good post every once in a while while on the site. ( I believe once every 3 months, could be wrong... I always post more than that... lol) _________________ |

| Yeeeee-haw, GUNners and GUNnettes! We've come ridin' in from yonder prairies of the good ol' GUN lands full of the lawful and the lawless and have nabbed ourselves a bit of both!
First bit of great news, coming to us by telegram, is that on May 10th we've surpassed the 90000 members mark!
(banner by @darkstyler )
Secondly, we've recognized and rewarded the following members of our westward town now, some returning while others geting their first spitshine in the Saloon: @ahyuser001 @Dextrose @Sonichu_fanboy and our great veteran friend and collaborator: @ncrvet
sadly, this is also a day of 13th so we've tracked down a couple of lurkers and... well, we stripped them of their access the lurkers are:- Spoiler:

We're terribly mournful over these demotions but they are necessary and impassionate.
That being said, let's get a proper ho-down going and commence la fiesta de los caballeros (cowboy party) in this town square!
Just remember, high noon duel and sundown face-offs are still a possibility
Don't forget to participate in the ongoing Screenshot Contest ! And share your favorite western tunes as well Link at the top of the page, under the buttons
My best regards and the tip of my hat to y'all! |

Whether you're qualified or not for promotion isn't determined by how long you've been here or even how much you post. It's determined by how active you are and the quality of the posts you've made in the time you've spent here. A bunch of short, one-lined posts don't really come across as high quality posts to most. Here especially, they come across as posts someone makes in a desperate attempt to get promoted. I'm sure your time for promotion will come eventually, Virus, but until then just makes some posts with a modicum of effort and thought put into them. Contribute to the community in any way you can. Don't complain about mod authors "disappearing" because they haven't released anything in a while. _________________ |

@DVAted Uh, I can not stay for the fiesta, sorry, it would have been with pleasure, but since the new cowboy theme, my head is priced and sought by the bounty hunters and I would be a target in the middle of the park. They could have made an effort anyway, 200 dollars is not much ^^ PS : About the banner, I just saw that I posted the pics with the limitation of 800 pixels servimg, (I forget it each time, I have trouble with this option.) that's probably why you've chosen the png. |
