Subject: The Modder's Corner: an Interview with Cpt.Rex Tue Sep 08, 2015 1:24 am
Welcome to the debut of a new feature on GUN - The Modder's Corner! TMC is an interview platform that looks to give us a peek inside the lives and minds of some of Fallout's most prominent and respected modders. Hope you guys enjoy it!
In the world of Fallout modding, there are a handful of names that are known in just about every part of the world. Names that you can post on any modding forum, in any language, and people know who you're talking about. Cpt.Rex is undoubtedly one such name. Best-known for the vast amount of Star Wars content that he has ported and customized for Fallout: New Vegas, Rex is one of Fallout's most talented and prolific modders. I had a chance to sit down with Rex recently, and here's what he had to say when asked about his early days in modding, his secret love of cooking, and much more!
Q: Thanks for sitting down with me today, Rex! For those unfamiliar with you, mind telling us a little about yourself?
A: Hi there, and thanks for having me - I never had an interview before. Well, my first name is Frank - though most of my friends and family call me Frankie. I am 38 years young/old, and I'm from Germany.
Q: You're one of Fallout's best-known and most respected modders. How did you get started in the craft?
A: Thank you for the kind words. Well.. that happened when Fallout 3 came out, years ago. I started to change some textures and things, and then I met Deepside from the old VGU who showed me how to work with models. It started with a little weapon pack which he made for the Fallout community.
Q. What is the most enjoyable part of the process for you, and what would you consider your greatest strength as a modder?
A: Actually, besides a few things, I like the whole process of modding. It is one of those things that calms me down after a day of work. Switch on some music, load up the model of your choice and start modding.. very entertaining.
As far as my greatest strength goes, i would say it is my patience... when something doesn't work as I want, I try and try and try until it does... or I ask someone for help!
Q: What is the most challenging aspect for you?
A: There are two things.. rigging gloves and hands, and working on solid parts of a model (such as a rigid chest plate).
Q: Its clear to anyone who's seen your work that you are a big Star Wars fan. Mind telling us about that?
A: Well, I have been a fan of it since I was a little child. It was my first movie in the cinema, and I was there with the whole family. So SW will always be related to family to me.
Q: Tell us about your reaction to the newest trailer for The Force Awakens. Screams of joys? Flailing your arms in the air? Or was that just me? (laughs)
A: I think it was flailing the arms in the air (laughs). I'm glad to see the old guys back, especially Han Solo and Chewbacca.. the words “Chewie, we are home” gave me heavy goosebumps.
Q: Any thoughts/opinions on Star Wars becoming a Disney property?
A: I don't think it is bad. What they have shown is promising. Star Wars: Rebels turned out to be a great show, and I don't see why the upcoming movies would fail.
Q. What other passions or hobbies do you have?
A: I like to play billiard (pool) with my friends, but nothing professional. Its just for fun. We tend to play every Friday evening if there is time. Also, I have been practicing martial arts for some years, but currently I can't do much with that because of some issues I have with my back. I also like to cook, especially when I have guests at my place.
Q: Someone walks up to you and says "I want to learn how to mod!" - what advice would you give them?
A: I would suggest that they start with something easy, like retexturing a weapon or a piece of armor. Do not be afraid of making mistakes.. like everything else in life, modding is a matter of “learning by doing”.
Q: If you could snap your fingers, and make any fictional character come to life (like standing right in front of you), who would it be? And why?
A: Heh.. there would be a bunch of characters I would like to see to come to life (laughs). Hm.. if I had to choose just one, I would say Captain Rex himself. I like that character because he is a man of honor, who is able to think for himself and decide whats good or wrong - even after all his drills and stuff.
Q: Besides modding, do you have any other hidden/unusual talents?
A: Well I dont know if it counts, but as I mentioned I like to cook - and so far no one seems to be complaining about that! (laughs).
Q: For my final question, is there anything awesome in the pipeworks that fans of your mods should look forward to?
A: Yes, actually! I am working on the Tatooine world space, as well as a mod that contains some armors from Battlefield (ported by dragbody and corra_ashu). I dont have a release date for them just yet, but it will be definitely happen before the end of the year.

Haha love it, it really shows more insight of the person themselves, instead of just the modding feats. Definitely a awesome new feature to have on GUN. I'm not someone whose been here long, but this shows that GUN definitely cares for their community members.

Hahaha this is great, can hardly wait for the next interview. Will this always be in written form or are you planning on recording an interview eventually?

I'm glad you guys enjoyed it! This feature was a long time coming... real life (and stupidity here with people that have since been banned) delayed it several times.
And thank you very much for the banner, @xzisted. You delivered *exactly* what I had in mind.

This is a fabulous feature! I'm all for getting to know modders better and members alike. It's always fun to read what makes them tick and modding is something so far removed from my life (I could never attempt any major modding, just no skills) that a feature like this really allows us to appreciate the deeper meaning of modding to the creators!
Cpt. Rex, you're awesome and thank you for the work you do for the community!

Great that something like this exists as it gives you more of a sort of connection with the modder and you can even maybe learn something from it .
Looking forward to the next one.
P.s. maybe you can ask modders what the think is the best mod/achievement in modding.

Very well put for a long term veteran of modding, specifically a fan of Star Wars, I know most of us are, heheheh!
But yeah, after reading it all, I can definitely compare some of my difficulties with rigging fingers and gloves, I've picked up on the experiences of armor rigging and whatnot, been modding Oblivion and Fallout for approximately more than 4 years now, but I will say this my experiences as another modder, specifically those who wish to learn modding and whatnot, there is a little message. A quote I am in favor of is within that message...
"Experience is the teacher of all things..."
But yeah, thumbs up to Cpt. Rex for his amazing and inspiring work, and to the interviewer for sharing this. (Tesvixen or whoever it was, lol I'll assume it's vixen.)

I'm wondering who's going to do an interview about you Tes . This is a cool project though, one of the old forum I was at had these similar interviews as well but they choose a random active member instead and it's always enjoyable to read these.
