Okay so I've been trying for like a week now to get Fallout 3 working right and can't do it. It crashes to desktop at different times when I'm in the middle of playing it. Sometimes I can play for 2 hours without a CTD other times I can't even play for 5 mins and I've tried the Inumthreads=2 thing but it still does it.
Any help would be appreciated!

If New vegas runs smoothly, download Tale of Two Wastelands, it'll allow you to play FO3 in the more stable New Vegas.

how big is your Mod list and whats your PC hardware and Operating System fsufan23
cause having outdated hardware can lead to crashes if you have a big mod list and i hear windows 8 can cause problems too.

Also try Archive Invalidated.

Yeah, if you want us to help you, you HAVE to post your specs and load order.

Are you using the Updated unofficial patch and Error Correction? I get an extremely stable gaming experience using those two together.

archive invalidated wouldn't be the problem if you had mods on that required it they wouldn't function right but he would complained about that too since body replacers depend on invalidation or you end up having weird looking tattoo pants and saggy looking skin

4gb ram enabler mod might help cause the game can be demanding on your Ram when using high graphical mods especially the mod TTW that requires 4gb enabler or textures wont load up right it things will look out of place.

When you require help there are a few things needed:
Load order.
Mods installed.
Hardware specs and settings.
Conditions when it crashes, try to find out situations like it might crash when there is a fight scene, removing armors (had that one myself) and entering/exiting buildings etc even fast travel or when it saves.

Some things to try first.

This will suck but..
Remove all your mods and run a simple Fallout game. Verify the cache through steam (if it is a Steam game ) with really nothing else running and see if it still crashes on you. Then you can try to add some mods. Many times there might be some problems with the game or hardware before you even added a single mod.

As jkdsh said, the best solution to run FO3 is to install tales of two wastelands. I had the same problems with FO3 as you said. Also if you have windows 7 you have to install several patches.

I gave the negative reps out for bad suggestions/not being on topic/pushing a mod unnecessarily/not really being helpful.

1: TTW is a FNV mod and therefore not really relevant to this topic.
2: TTW is difficult to install, comes with it's own problems, is almost incompatible with every fallout 3 mod, and is incredibly easy to muck up. We want to focus on fixing this fallout 3 install, not dealing with the clusterfuck that is TTW.
3: If OP wanted to play TTW he would play TTW, not Fallout 3. As shocking as it is, some of us don't want to play your damn merger.
4: I find people who instantly reply to any topic about fallout 3 with cries of TTW as, if not more, annoying then people who respond with "Oh, you're playing fallout 3? Delete that and play FNV instead." Maybe people just want to play Fallout 3, okay?

As far as I understand, I am within the ruleset for reps, though I am always open to hearing if I am misusing the system .

i agree with aussieshepherd you should try 4gb ram enabler.
