I know there are a lot of trolls giving low ratings in metacritic but it was somewhat interesting that there weren't equally enough positive reviews. You'd expect a lot more fans to grade the game well but that hasn't been the case. Unless, they are all too busy having fun.
http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/fallout-4
Some of these complaints and low graders do have merit.
But still, all of this accumulates to a grand total of "5" out of 10?
The question I have for you is... are we just excited for the mods? If you say no and than I ask you to not to download or use any mods for the next 2-3 years. Would you do that? I'd guess no...
If there was no modding available for FO4, would we still be as excited or eager to play FO4 and call it the "Game of the Year"? I've always wondered what would happen if FO4 was not a moddable game and see if people would be less excited.
Just for comparison sake, Konami who made MGS:V got a score of 7.4 by users. http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/metal-gear-solid-v-the-phantom-pain I expected the trolls to hit MGS:V hard due to many controversial microtransactions, game breaking bugs, etc. regarding the game.
But I guess time will tell where FO4 truly ranks.

when i first played the game i was disappointed but still liked the game my first opinion was " theres something off with this it doesn't have that fallout charm" but after playing it for awhile i really like it but still feels like somethings missing.
i was excited as hell for the base game but i dont think id play it very long without mods maybe a few weeks without mods and id get bored and thats weird as i played fallout 3 for 4 years on console and new vegas for 2 years and im still not bored of them even with fallout 4's new mechanics and gameplay in general it just always feels like somethings missing.
and for metacritic i wouldn't go by what is said their just for the fact people dont always give genuine opinions on games or anything if i had to give fallout 4 a rating it'd be 9/10 but thats just my opinion

I don't know about others, but I probably would have no interest in Bethesda games if they were not mod-friendly. I don't really take Metacritc reviews seriously becuase they're usually less than stellar. (For example, there's some Cory in the House DS game that tons of people rated 10 out of 10, and I think I've heard stories of people from 4chan or whatever coming together giving games tons of bad reviews, though that's probably not what happened here. EDIT: That actually IS what happened here.) I'm enjoying the game so far as I haven't played a lot yet, but I'm sure I'll get bored of the vanilla game. And unfortunately, some of the things in the reviews are true. Bethesda has been simplifying their games more and more as time goes on. I'm not far in enough to see if the story complaints are valid, but the story bits I got from the trailer left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I'm not going to surprised if the story is sub-par or even abysmal, because I knew going in that writing isn't Bethesda's strong point. These reviewers seem to have either not known that, or they forgot New Vegas wasn't made by Bethesda. (I saw a lot of the reviews compare the writing to New Vegas.) Overall, I feel it's likely a decent game, but it will need mods to sustain people. Or me, at least.

Honestly I think the general opinion of anyone who has played FO3/FNV with mods would consider FO4 average/sub-par regardless, even if the game is newer and with different dynamics to it, there's just something so therapeutic about tweaking the game from visual enhancements to armour ports that just makes it so much more fun. Plus naturally bugfixes and general immersion mods always make the experience better. A good example for myself is the cape mod in Skyrim, it seems like such a small addition, but that extra piece of armour made me replay the whole game.

I didnt get the fallout feel from my few hours into the game. Honestly ive just been playing new vegas. The sheer amount of personalization that I have in new vegas makes it better than fallout 4. Fallout 4 specifically seemed to overlook a few subtle attentions to detail. Like the holstered weapons or facial animation on attack. I could go on. I just dont want the loss of detail to continue, as while I love the modding community, sometimes betheada has to add things in by default. I just dont want our beloved fallout to turn into a frequent release game with little attention involved.

I Personally am loving the game so far. I'm glad that it's different from 3 and NV. If all the games felt the same, I'd wouldn't be playing it. I've got 30 hours in so far, and at first, I wasn't sure if I'd like it or not. But the more I play, the more I love it. I'm pretty sure that a lot of people aren't giving it time. If it's not immediately great right from the start, they stop playing it. Hell, it took me a very long time to get into 3 when it first came out, but when I did, I was hooked. I think a lot of gamers that are giving it bad reviews, haven't put serious time into yet, have had bad luck with bugs and were expecting this perfect masterpiece ( that never ever happens) or they just wanna be that person to write a bad review. No new title comes out perfect these days. It just doesn't happen, you'll always have bugs and issues, so thank the maker that this game is as playable as it is, and didn't get pulled like the latest Batman. I'm loving every minute I get with it. Like FoVet said though, something does seem like it's missing, and I'm not sure what it is...and as far as modding goes, I played the old Fallouts without mods for a long time, can I do it with this one? Yes. I think the only thing that really bugs me about this game, is the lack of support for Ultrawide. I'm playing with a 21:9 ratio, and thankfully, the only bug I have is the little bit of HUD stretch. As soon as there is a mod/fix for that, I'll be all over it, but completely changing the game with mods as soon as they are available, not so much.

One thing I really dislike about Bethesda's relationship with the modding community is that it seems they almost expect modders to fix their game bugs, there are still some bugs that are only fixable through unofficial patches in previous games. I hate how 'because bethesda', they instantly get a free pass on game bugs or aesthetics that no other game dev/publisher gets in terms of leeway. Something in the current fallout that I think they could have done better is how the UI is, while it looks okay, the inventory management feels lazy, is annoying picking up random notes in the wasteland and having to go into your pip-boy and find them manually then read them. The Facial animations seem off too, I cant help but be distracted when people are talking up close to me, also I thought by now they would have fixed the collision meshes, there are definitely some area you should be able to shoot through but you hit the wall anyway. With all that said Fallout 4 is a okay game, nothing special but not crap either, and it will really depend on mods to see if it elevates in status for me.
On the side do bad reviews really matter as long as you come but with your own conclusions through weighing all the sides.

Just so everyone is aware, 4 chan's /v board did a raid on the meta critic user reviews, so don't trust them. As a whole, don't trust meta critics user reviews

For some developers they absolutely matter. Sometimes a publisher pays out bonuses for a game that receives 'xx or higher' metacritic score. So all these ****ing idiots who spam bad reviews just to be trolls can actually do meaningful damage by doing so.

Saw the same thing happen on Steam, a lot of really soulless reviews that gloss over most of the core elements of a Fallout game and its mechanics, but go at it as a "NEXT GEN GAME" and how it doesn't live up to The Witcher 3, and so on. It's a bit comedic, because after only playing 2 days of this game, i can honestly say this is now my favorite Fallout. It feels natural and dynamic no more robotic and almost on the rail gunfights. Everything is so polished and slick that it almost doesnt feel like a Fallout game. Honestly other than the main questline being a bit dull, this game is easily a 9/10 from me in terms of atmosphere/dialogue, side quests. As for gameplay.... 10/10. Most of the "Reviewers" i can guarantee haven't played the previous games and are the type to play a game solely for graphics and "totally original story".

I'm loving the game and I'm taking my time and searching for every location and clearing each location, I guess I'm a lot like Morgan from TWD, I have to clear! I haven't even made it into boston yet. The settlement thing is keeping me pretty occupied as well. However if there wasn't mods for it, I'd probably finish the game and not come back to it because I would have seen everything.
Mass Effect for example, I've only played 1 and 2 twice and 3 only once.
Rarely do I pay attention to Meta Critic though, and it's quite bull that companies give bonuses based on that instead of review scores from reputable video game news sites.

Same people who complained about the graphics before the game was even out. They will never be satisfied, annoying, whiny bitches, <comment removed>. Ignore them, block them on social media, do what you have to do
Staff edit: @Sonichu_fanboy, do not generalize and attack an entire community of gamers in this manner. That won't be tolerated here.

Lets keep this civil here and let me start off by saying that i did not buy fallout 4 because of the hype , yes the hype worked it away from me.
All the spoilers , videos, the tons of videos from so many different youtubers who sometimes never played another bethesda game. I lost the new vibe and with that i lost most of my interest , if it was not for the gun count down i would not have knows that it would soon release.
At this stage i watched a lot of streams and videos about it as i was hoping to be suprised and maybe get excited to purchase fallout 4 , sadly it did not as i found to begin the game to bright even compared to enb mods , it looked like you where using chems all the time , the gun play looks well made and the new weapon system will allow for some new great and crazy combinations its just it did not blew me away it was not: WOW thats amazing but rather : looks fun and nice texture.
The ai changes are quite buggy right now but i think that will soon mostly be resolved with pathces and mods and will greatly enhance immersion , as the ai where in my honest opinion the weakest parts of the previous 2 bethesda fallout games ( i prefer to leave the origianl fallout games out of this )
Its just i hope that the expansion will excite me and encourge the purchase along with a price drop.

I don't know but maybe it is because people expected so much from Fallout 4 because of 3 and New Vegas

The game is great. Bethesda brought a true next gen experience to our homes, what more do you want? Yes, the game is different, but so was fallout 3 at release date. I think this playstyle is perfect, I will play a remake of F3/NV with this new engine and gameplay changes at any time.
Fallout 4 is far from perfect, but people just like to bash things for no reason. Take it from someone who has been in the cod community since 2003, whiners are to be ignored. If you start listening to them, you will eventually start hating the game, yourself, and everyone. Play the game, love it for what it is, or just move on. It's just a videogame. And honestly, who cares about a score from a "Game critic" website? If it's good, people will talk about it, if it isn't , chances are you will also know about it somehow, without judging everything from some random number. Especially when your average review goes like this:
2/10, I suck at the game, and I don't like how the guns look. I wanted the exact same thing as last year. It's okay-IGN
Plus, trolls. Just another reason to ignore this whole gaming critic thing entirely and just play the game.

OK Let's get it straight. 27% of this is cry that "That's not RPG anymore Bethesda why !?!?!11one?" 20% Of this are graphic experts that can say something is photorealistic even if they never left their houses . 13% Are story chumps (OK I can give them that story was Meh). And like 20% Of hype culture people. Lads & Gals that just got overhyped (I told ya Watch Dogs *coug* *cough* ). And rest of it is just constructive criticism :/. You need to remember every game that have such a hype around it will be judged harshly. Thats why you shouldn't wait and look at reviews. You need to get the game and play it. That's all I can say about this

Meh. People are allowed to have different tastes. Fallout 4 is not trying to be a game that appeals to everyone, it is focused on delivering a specific type of experience (streamlined UI and RPG elements, more action heavy, etc.) and that's OK.
Personally, I love this game. However I could see why some people do not prefer it similar to how some do not prefer Skyrim to Oblivion. The core experience is largely the same, but some of the more immersive elements (repair, skill points, etc.) were stripped away in favor of accessible gameplay.

Skill points were never "Immersive". You could become a mentally challenged person(INT 3 or lower) and be a master scientist and engineer, for example. It either made you too inept to some extent(Older games), or made you jack of all trades in the newer games.
I find this style of play much more realistic, I know the first thing I would do is try and make as much things by stripping the resources around me. It's kind of implied you maintain your weapons when you use a weapons station. Less stupid things to worry about, more time to explore and play. This is coming from a staunch oldschool fallout fan that started playing when fallout tactics was new BTW

I do feel some of the criticism is justified. I really would preferred if it was more of an RPG and less simple, I feel the new dialog system is a detriment to the game as a whole (another thing that was simplified), and from what I've seen so far, I think the writing is appallingly bad. Other than that, I really like the game, however. And as for immersion, well, I've never managed to ever get immersed into any game because I find things such as the UI too distracting, so that doesn't bother me too much. Though some (any only some) of the simplifications I like. I thought weapon and armor durability was annoying and I'm glad it's gone. I can't think of anything else I liked though.

Some of it is, Julum, but its a known fact that some people choose to give reviews just to troll/be idiots. I've seen a comment from someone who trashed the game on a Steam review, but admitted that he actually really liked the game.
I guess those people are suffering from a serious lack of having a life, but hey... to each their own.
