Just wondering if this is possible. I tried to do it in GECK, but I can only select Willow's .esp or the custom race's .esp. When I try and select them both it tells me that I have more than one master selected and that the load operation was aborted.

To load multiple master files is very easy, go to documents/my games/FalloutNV and there you should see GECKCustom.ini, open it and change bAllowMultipleMasterLoads from 0 to 1. But I could never change anyones race to Lighting race, if you can, tell me how because I could never figure it out.

Try loading the lightning race as a normal file, then use willows as the active file, I'm not exactly sure but I think the lightning race is just a .nif so you might just be able to select the nif.

The problem isn't changing the race, the problem is that they appear invisible when I open the game, they appear normal in the GECK, but in-game it's just too messed up.

It's possible but I am not too sure how. This is probably a Dragbody question.

Hmm that's a very interesting problem. I'll have to take a look at it more when I reinstall my fallout.

I would be so grateful if you could ask him, this has been annoying me for a while now and I would love to have Lighting as a companion.

This worked thanks so much. How I got it to work is I loaded the Fallout .esm, Willow's .esm, and the lightning race .esm. Then I put the lightning race on Willow. After that I clicked File and then Save. I named it NVWillow(Lightning Race). Then I made a new merged patch and put the NVWillow(Lightning Race).esp right after the NVWillow.esp. Then I loaded up New Vegas to see if it worked and it did.
Spoiler:
Can someone tell me how I give him +rep?

The way shepard setup the custom races is unorthodox to say the least, It took me like 3 days to figure out how to properly change niner to wesker and make the skin tone match up properly.

@xThat1WhiteKidx, thanks man, really appreciate it, but it didn't work, did you just change her race? Or did you do something else?.

And how did you do it if you don't mind me asking?

What i did at least is when i opened the file in winrar and then opened the bsa file. It shows two sets of files. A set of meshes and a set of textures extract each to your desktop. but not both at the same time. Then drop the folders into your data folder, then go into the GECK and load up a race you want to replace like niner.esm or willow.esp and then go to the custom race you want to replace them with such as JillValentine.esp or AlbertWesker.esp and load that one as well and set as active file. Then once it is done loading you go to the NPC tab on the side and find the companion you want to change. Then double click the companion race and when it loads you check the stats to (can be all races, and change the race to the custom race you want to replace him/her with. Then change the actorbase to that custom race as well and also check the model/animation. Then i go to the character tab on top of the page and click the race option. Then find the custom race you want and click on it and go to "body" their will options to change the textures and meshes for that race. The rest is up to you to find the files depending on where they are.

I know it's been answered already but if you're still having problems here's how I learned to change races and it's been working for me since no matter the race:
1. Open up GECK 2. Load of whatever mod or file the npc is in(like if it's niner, load up his file, or if it's boone, load up the fallout file) as well as the raceand set the mod companion as the active file.(if the npc is from the vanilla game then just mark the race as the active file) 3. After that go to Character>Race and look for the custom race then duplicate it. Afterwards save and close the GECK 4. Re-open and the GECk and load the files again 5. Find the npc file and change him/her race to the race duplicate. 6. Go to the "Face" tab and hit "reset". That way the npc doesn't look like a spawn of satan or something. 7. After all that hit "ok" and save your work then boom, you're done.
Process has always worked for me, should work for you too.
Sidenote: It should especially work for the lightning race because not too long ago I changed Veronica's race to the lightning race and I've had no problem's since. I can't find the pic but I did find one of when I turned Niner into the Hero race with mikoto mod
