Back again after not writing anything for a while now.
Marcus Dunstan, do you know who he is? Probably no and don't care either, but what if i told you that he's the writer of several movies of the Saw franchise? That would most likely wake up your curiosity and even get the fangirls/boys wet. But if you ask me, i really hate Saw, those movies are just unwatchable for me (and i'm being generous here). Every movie sucks more than the last one. So what was that thing that caught my attention back in 2010 when i first watch it? Obviously the guy with the mask!
trailer sucks but the movie doesn't, trust me.:
Got really hyped after seeing that psychokiller, but still wasn't any easy for me to watch because of that rotten Saw scent in the air. Good thing for me, what i got from The Collector was totally unexpected, even with a little Sawy elements here and there, it was nice and also fun to watch.
The movie starts showing the average american house that you always see in horror movies, where a group of workers are doing repairs and stuff. One of those workers is Arkin, a weird looking guy that after a hard day of work, returns home with his wife and daughter. When he arrives, his wife tolds him that she owns the mob alot of money and that if he can't get it before midnight, everyone dies. Because of this, Arkin plans a heist in the place he knows best: the average american house that you always see in horror movies. All of this without knowing that he's about to play hide and seek with a serial killer inside it, of course.Once Arkin got inside the apparently empty house (owners where on vacation that same day) and starts to open the safe, he hears how someone enters the house, a creepy masked guy that has some waaaay more disturbing things in mind that just a simple heist.
That was something i thought was really cool, putting two bad guys in the same place and make them fight to show who's the alpha (i mean for real, don't bring Freddy vs Jason please), but the thing is that the less evil guy has to be the victim here, and who's that? Poor Arkin, a simple burglar that has nothing to offer against a "professional" lvl 100 psycho killer like The Collector, wich is going to turn the average american house into his own playground, with lots of deathly traps with the sole objective of hunting his preys down.
The thing i most enjoyed about the movie (besides The Collector himself) was the great amount of questions i asked myself when Arkin and The Collector where face to face for the first time. Who is him? What kind of motivation he has for doing what he does? Is he wearing a bulletproof vest under his sweater? and most important, how, just how someone can arm so many killer traps in such little time? God, not even McGiver does that. But if you really wish to enjoy the movie, don't overthink things or wait for the huge gaps the movie has to be filled, just lay back and enjoy what really matters, The Collector and the fucked up things he's going to do to everyone, including Arkin.
Not so many modern psycho killers are going to give you such a disturbing feeling like The Collector, and that is precisely what i like about him, that you don't know nothing about him or why he likes doing the things he does... and his eyes, those black and shiny animal eyes behind the mask are just fantastic.
If you haven't watch this movie yet and thought Saw was mindfucker and unconfortable (i donvt get how, honestly), wait and see what The Collector is capable of, the perfect host for a bloody party in wich the only objective in his mind is to tear every single one of his victims apart and winning our hearts with his huge charisma (you're gonna love him after the second kill, promise)
One thing i must clarify just in case, this is not Saw, so no dumb traps, puzzles, plot twists or 10000 flashbacks during the ending. What you get is a pure slasher/torture porn, unconfortable and original movie, in wich you can see how everyone related to it did everything they could in order to make something different that could make the true fans of the genre fell in love again. The plot may suck, i agree, but who really cares about that when you have someone like The Collector? You don't even want a good story, you just want that he doesn't stop killing, that's all.
OVERALL 8/10

Wow the way you described this film makes me curious to watch it. I always seen it up on the movie channel selection but always skipped over it for some reason. Thanks to this post I'm going to have to go ahead and give it a go.
Great to see you take your time to do another movie review! Enjoyed the information.

i LOVE this movie and would recommend it to anyone that likes horror. the only thing i dislike with it is that one scene with the cat..
you might wind up liking the sequel to this movie, "The Collection". it's pretty good imo!
That scene was pointless, why kill the poor kittie? still, it was kinda fun when arkin just threw him away lol. What i thougt was really pathetic was the phone with the huge nail trap. Just lame.
Part 2 is a bit sloppy i think, but that's because we already got blown away by the main character (The Collector, not Arkin) in the first movie, so he's like not the big deal anymore. But don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean it's bad, part 2 is awesome and totally worth watching (you already know this when you see what happens during the opening scene in the disco).
