Fallout has always had it’s funny and wacky moments, but it is well known for covering very scary and dark topics like genocide, rape, pedophilia, necrophilia, cannibalism, you know, horrible shit. You, at some point in one of the games, become a witness to all these happenings, hell you could take part in them if you have the choice to. What I want to ask my fellow GUNners is what are the darkest quests in Fallout.

In my opinion, is the Andale quest in Fallout 3. What makes this quest so creepy and disturbing is that the families in Andale are all incestual inbreeders. Not only that, they're cannibals. The cannibal part is disturbing, but the incestual inbreeding is what tops it all off. I have never expected something like this to be explored in the Fallout universe, let alone Bethesda's Fallout universe.

For New Vegas, there are a lot of really dark quests, but in my opinion, Vault 11 and the whole story revolving around Cook-Cook is really fucking disturbing.

I saw this and my first thought was "Andale", but you beat me xd. When i first visit the town i just picklocked the shed door without speaking too anyone and found all of that butcher stuff. Then i came out the shed and all of the town people where there and i was like "holy shit, what did i just did? xd".

Another creepy quest could be the Oasis one... I mean:

Also the Vault 75 quest from FO4. The quest itself has nothing scary, but if you read all the terminals and learn the story behind the vault you can find pretty fucked up things.

The first quest that came to mind is Tranquility Lane. All those Vault residents trapped in a simulated pre-war America, unknowingly being controlled and killed off by Braun. There is no good ending or way to save them, even the failsafe has them massacred by Chinese soldiers. The bad karma options in this quests are ridiculously evil, and yet you still have a justifiable motive to commit these atrocities. After all, the LW's Dad is stuck in there and the Vault Dwellers in the simulation have been trapped in there for hundreds of years. But still, becoming the pint-sized slasher, manipulating  and relentlessly murdering everyone in the simulation while your Dad is forced to watch as a dog also just seems chilling to me. If that'd been me, or I figure most people, would rather just die in the War.

Another quest I feel is quite dark was the quest to kidnap kids from Little Lamplight and give them to Paradise Falls to enslave them.This needs no explanation, it's just plain evil. Although this isn't dark especially for the Fallout universe where this is expected, it's still quite despicable.

I would say mercy killing all the ghoul soldiers in camp searchlight was pretty dark. And having to see how hard it was on the Sgt. made it even harder.

Not a full quest, but I think of the story with the Krivbeknih. Where you have to take it back from the Swamp People, then you have to deal with Obadiah or the missionary lady. I really wish there was more to that quest because it was really building into something very interesting.

@IRORIEH I really wish Bethesda could go in depth with the Dunwich lore. It is probably some of the most interesting pieces of lore that they have created. It’s a homage to Lovecraftian horror, but it is also kind of a callback to the more darker aspects of the Elder Scrolls games, at least in my opinion. They were honestly blue balling us with that krivbeknih quest.

I liked when it covered darker subjects, like Betsy being raped by Cook-Cook and helping her get help dealing with the still present trauma, and Vault 22 where everyone was turned into spore carriers including the children. IMO fallout 4 was heavilly lacking in these areas, I actually felt fear in vault 22 and I still don't like going back there now, Fallout 4 I had no fear except that I might crash before reaching a bed in survival.

The don't even need to make it a major quest. It just felt like we needed more backstory. Maybe some terminal entries or something... I know the darker elements aren't everyones cup of tea, but I feel like we need some of them to offer a different perspective of Fallout's strange reality.

@Primus_Daibhidh Yeah, Fallout 4 had a more cinematic and hopeful vibe to it. I think the darkest Fallout 4 went is when you discover that one twist in the Far Harbor DLC.

Seeing as to how Cook-Cook's been mentioned a few times with a nice mention of Vaults 11 and 22, I'd have to give a spotlight to Vault 3. And I think that the story of what happened in Nipton is worth mentioning.

The tragedy that their fate was the result of a reckless approach than a steady and cautious one. Such a waste of potential before they even really had a chance. Whether you go inside as part of the quest for the Great Khans, or just by passing the Speech check, the nonchalant tone of how Motor-Runner tells his story, absolutely devoid of any remorse. Then you learn the story of the vault through the various terminals, and what they were robbed of by the fiends.


Nipton, especially when you first start to approach it - those impaled heads lining up. You venture in further, noting the number of burning tire piles and bodies with the line-up of crucified Powder Gangers, that's when you approach him, and get the details of what they had done.


And of course, there is Vault 34. Specifically, "the choice" at the end of the long haul into it's depths. To forsake the lives of the trapped survivors, or "help" the sharecropper farms by merely postponing the inevitable. It's the kind of situation where you are put in the position of "the few vs the many", unaware of how effective the latter's choice really is.


There is also the moment in Veronica's quest, I Could Make You Care. When you take the route to let her have a chance to leave the Brotherhood. The chance to Begin Again with the Followers of the Apocalypse. You think you've found her a new home. That you will no longer have to deal with the Brotherhood because Veronica was not going to go back, and the day later that you return, the first thing you see is that pile of ash with the bodies around. You couldn't help but to feel a bit betrayed, insulted, and a touch responsible. The Brotherhood had crossed an unforgivable line, slaughtering an innocent group of their "rival faction". All out of paranoia and their xenophobic ideology. That was certainly a grim moment that I didn't see coming the first time around.


New Vegas has it's great number of lighthearted moments, but the Mojave is a great desert, where there are plenty of grim tales to be found and experienced.

Good question! I find what happened at the Sierra Madre Casino pretty disturbing

The slavery quests always made me feel sick to my stomach. Especially throwing collars on them and forced someone into slavery was such a disturbing feeling. Fallout 3's slavery was a bit disturbing for my taste and threw me off all the time. Wanted to always light that place up with hellfire.

Fallout new vegas was messed up with the Ultra Luxe and their whole cannibal society was dark to me. Knwoing that Mr.House didn't try to castrate them for eating people. I blow up that entire casino everytime with so many bullets.

Fallout 4 and what they did to Cait (HUGE Cait fan btw, the scottish accent and red hair is to die for) makes me so mad walking into the Combat Zone. I felt like it was a dark tomb/grave for her if you didn't get to save here. Im so glad we get to light that place up and then get to fall in love with her.

Fallout 4 and university point is fucked as well. The fact that razed that place looking for info that wasn't real or not. Just based on a hunch.

There is probably darker but, those are the ones that come to mind and royally irritate me when i play.

How has none mentioned the Pitt yet? I mean, theres cannibalism, plague, slavery, and to make it the much more interesting a fucking rough choice in the end. One that I always walk away from with a very bitter taste in my mouth either way. I mean fuck, thats a dark and Grim DLC. I always think of that line in Spec Ops the line now when I finish the DLC "Do you feel like a hero yet?" when I am leaving the Pitt.

In NV, I always found Dead Money rather dark. But nothing comes off quite as dark in my opinion as Randall Clarks Journal's in Honest Hearts. Damn they hit me in the heart, but also so very dark hearing about what he's seen.

Seein as how all the good ones are already taken, I'll go with Arlen Glass' quest in Fo4, I know it's more sad then dark, but you are telling a father that his family died and kinda have to listen to the heartbreaking final message while he breaks down in front of you to finish the quest.

The mutated infant in vault 22 was pretty saddening, especially since you have to waste him once you find him. There's also the crashed scout bus in honest heart, child skeletons were everywhere. On top of that there's the massacre of vault 3, I swear those fiends deserve to be crucified or enslaved by the legion.

"The Coyotes" From Fallout New Vegas. Where you deal with the 2 slavers in Westside, Saint James and Dermot. If you read Dermot's journal it says that they would kid nap children and murder their parents, then sell them to various fiends Moto runner, Nephi, and Cook-Cook. It also goes into detail saying that they sold 3 siblings to Cook-Cook, 2 girls and a boy. And Cook-Cook tied the 2 girls up and made them watch as he burned their brother alive.

Yeah the Coyotes was shocking, it was even worse when I realised that James was actually 'touching the merchandise' and even kept one of the children's teddy Bear

Probably Come Fly With Me if you choose to sabotage the rockets and let them fly into each other, mostly because of the consequences it leaves for Novac.

Any quests relating to do with Vault-Tech, especially in Fallout 3. If you did some exploring and see what kind of horrifying experiments those damn eggheads caused.....for example - Vault 106.
