Access to restricted mods isn't dictated by your reputation, but rather your rank. The mods you're after are for members who are Colonial ranked or above. Getting a promotion isn't difficult — just be active, be polite and be a decent human being. The reputation system serves little purpose outside of bragging rights (I think, not sure; maybe I'm wrong) so don't worry 'bout it.

It's best to stay active by forum participation especially after promotions to avoid demotions. When I first joined VGU 2.0, I mostly relied on the chatbox to communicate and befriend multiple members (Meow Meow, BoomBewm, Hitman, SnowHammer, DVAted, etc) through social media via Facebook, Skype, etc; not enough time in the forums which led to my demotion. Make sure to give notice when you're going to be away for a bit. Regardless, the active community makes the time go by fast along with interesting new topics.

Also, to gain reputation is as simple as interacting with the community and respecting the people and the site's rules. Its like a karma system, well that's how I see it of course Gaining rep points doesn't necessarily mean that you will instantly get access though because gaining access isn't just a perk, its simple sign that the people here trust you with what's behind that area. I think by now you're curious to what's behind it, but trust me when I say that there is a lot more to GUN that just that and the mods.

Yeah, I think it's a bit normal to be intimidated by this site at first. There is a better sense of security and community than other sites, and I think that's what seems to attract people.
