This has been bugging me for a while. In Elder Scrolls games you can ride horses and the tech is there to do it in Fallout, with both games being on the same engine and all. Yet Bethesda didn't include the possibility of having mounted combat with Brahmins.

It would look silly to ride with bulky brahmins and bighorners.

Horses would compliment New Vegas beautifully. The truth is that Kim Jong Un ate the mountable creatures since the get go. After the bombs fell. Kimmy mutated into a giant super mutant with endless appetite to finish the job. Joking. Possibly due to lack of animation / mesh resources

I don't know but I'm glad they didn't; it wouldn't feel right
I imagine making the engine/lore/story/setting capable of swinging a sword from horseback in a fantasy world is slightly easier/appropraite than firing a fat man from Brahminback in a post apocalyptic world, though I could be entirely wrong

Personally I think that mounts would be silly in a game like Fallout, where the feature that stands out the most is the depressing atmosphere, something that is better taken in when walking around. Games like the Elder Scrolls have mounts, but only because if they didn't people would be complaining even more. It would make perfect sense in the Elder Scrolls, but not in Fallout.

While I agree that being able to ride a Horse in FnV would have been great, even if not lore friendly. I am more interested in having the possibility to use vehicles. I mean, the BOS has been able to build the prydwen, they have vertibirds, so did the Enclave and the NCR (if I recall right, there's even mentions of a mechanized NCR unit), anyway, motorized vehicles are lore friendly I think. It's almost certain that some people and or faction have been able to create and use some sort of motorized vehicles in the wastelands. If the devs were to add some sort of transport in the next games, I think it will be vehicles rather than mountable creatures (hell, Fo4 has vertibirds, even if it's a poorly developped feature imo). That said, now that I think of it, having a deathclaw as a mount doesn't sound that bad at all.

Then it is possible, without certainty of course, that the horses after a nuclear war is all been........ eaten.
The war does not stop hunger !!!

Perhaps horses would have been out of place in Fallout 3 or 4 but New Vegas was practically a Western. It's a shame Sawyer wrote them out of the lore due to engine limitations despite showing up in Avellone's "All-Roads" graphic novel.
Though, this is a thing:
Spoiler:
Using dragbody's private horse model and a modified version of this: http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/41698/?
Spoiler:
There was also this, But it was glued to the animation system so every human character rode a horse when the mod was on.
Spoiler:
At the moment the only real solution is to use this, however it uses the dog animations instead of the more fitting bighorner animations for some reason and despite being lore friendly just feels really out of place with the neo-western aesthetic.
Maybe one day I can ride into the nevada sunset, a man can dream.

@cyber_funk You gotta love the modding scene because there's always that one hero who will make the unthinkable possible.
I'm kind of sad to think we'll never see horses in Fallout, since there's a reason they've been the backbone of human logistics for thousands of years. But cats, which were presumably eaten, made a return, so who knows.

Yeah that bugs me too. It would make a lot of sense to have new ways of transport, but sadly it's not present.

I'm not sure what it is exactly, but I always felt that mounts in Fallout would take away the adventure of exploring. This is just personal preference though, as I don't really use mounts in Elder Scrolls either.

It still seems like the whole 'Getty-up-buttercup' thing is bound to rear it's head in a future fallout game and provide some sort of mounted travel. If my hunch is right, we'll be seeing an adult-sized getty-up-buttercup fill in as a Dogmeat sort of role, only rideable.

Hopefully those Horse mods develop somewhat because those seem like a given in a fallout game set in the western US.
I can only assume the limitations of the game engine are responsible for this. Still, maybe someday. I know XRE cars and a few Motorcycle mods exist, but they aren't altogether too smooth controls wise.

@IIHawkerII I said I wanted mounts, but not like this. Not like this!
@IRORIEH Oblivion had horses and that came out 2 years before FO3, not to mention them being on the same engine.

the vault that preserved the mounts has yet to be discovered...obviously
