| Hello, ladies and gentlemen of VGUnetwork :hellobig: I've decided today to kick-start preparations for the Screenshot Contest of OTHER video games because I think we've had enough of Fallout
We've had 2 Fallout contests so far. This time we'll mix it up a bit: We'll use a Judge Panel to argument the winner. We'll need 3 members who are good at appreciating screenshots based on a variety of criteria, of which I'd like to mention a few:
Screenshot's composition: - colors (if it's mono-colored for an artistic purpose or for a whim. if it's too saturated or too depressing, etc.) - brightness (if it's too dark to make out any details, or if darkness is part of its effect, or if light is overflowing and blinding, etc.) and shading (if the main elements of the shot are under a shadow for no reason) - contrast (if it's decent, allowing to distinguish details, or exaggerated, showing only bare features or outlines) - centering (if the upper half of the picture is of the wall or ceiling, if the legs are cutoff from the frame for a better focus on the face and torso or because of bad zoom, etc.) - filled space (how much of the screenshot's surface is used) - clipping (if the stock of the rifle clips with the chest, or if two characters stand so close to each other that their geometry overlaps) and other bugs that could have been avoided - number of characters (2's a couple, 3's a crowd hah just kidding. but, seriously, sometimes too many NPCs ruin a picture, sometimes they improve it. depends on context) - (and so on...)
Screenshot's setting: - context (if the scene is understandable or has to be explained) - essence (if it sends a message, or has an underlying meaning: courage, loyalty, fear, sacrifice, etc. this can be observed easily or it could have a hidden meaning, could be witty, intelligent, funny, emotional or brutal, and so on...) - entertainment value (if it's engaging or just posing in front of the "camera", if the posing is "badass" or just "meh", etc.) - immersion (if it's a scene you could be part of or if you're just an observer, if it's emotional or terrifying) - creativity (if it's a surprising atypical scene or, on the contrary, a familiar setup, but one that defines that game very well) - and others...
______________________ Do NOT judge according to: - type (if it's a portrait, a landscape or an action shot) - genre (don't differentiate between racer and chess simulator. use the other criteria) - resolution (a small screenshot could be more beautiful than a large one) - your favorite games (if you never played L4D, but you're a huge MGS fan, you can't prioritize an MGS screenshot over a L4D one just because of this reason) - your favorite characters, weapons or vehicles (same as above)
_______________________________ The rules for the contest itself so far are: Rule 1. NO Fallout or Elder Scrolls screenshots. They have their own contests. This is for other games. Rule 2: Respect the theme, don't say you didn't notice it Rule 3: No Photoshop or other post-game manipulation This also means no memes, no added text (made-up dialogue) Rule 4: No mods, hacks or tweaks. Only Vanilla gameplay. DLC is allowed. Rule 5: No nudity or other taboo material Rule 6: ... Others to be added ________________________________
These are building while we prepare for the contest. I hope votes will be in by the 25th of September
The panel of judges will decide on theme, number of screenshots/submission and other details that arise.
________________________________ I will accept your applications to become a panel judge here. Reply and tell us why you'd be a good screenshot critic.
UPDATE: ________________________________ Alright so I've settled for a 3 judge panel instead of 5 Judge Panel selected: DVAted Tesvixen TheHulksCousin (reserve: Nem, Undeadsewer)
The reserves are there in case one of the other judges pulls out or fails to show up.

| I personally think this is a great idea. There are are a lot of good games out there that offer the possibility to take beautiful screenshots, so the appreciation of captured material should not be centered to the Fallout and Elder Scrolls games. I would like to volunteer to aid in this project. Having worked on the most-recent screenshot contest should give an example of my abilities, but I do not expect to be handed a position on the judge panel for that reason alone. I have worked on paintings and similar mediums my entire life, and I have twice had my work added to a local gallery during youth art events. Also, having taken a wide array of art classes, I believe I am uniquely qualified to help with this endeavor. For qualifications more centered around video games, I have been playing them since before I attended school. Ever since I began playing on PC, I have always attempted to capture my gaming moments in the most theatrical and narrative way possible. If you wish to see some of my work, let me know. If you would like my help in this project, I will. If you find I did not do a satisfactory job on the July contest, or you believe you have found someone more qualified, I will understand. _________________ - Can you figure it out?:

| I'd be game for something like this. Without meaning to toot my own pigtails, I've been taking screenshots longer than some of our members have been alive. Haha!
I also have a background in traditional art, so I fully understand the concept of telling a story within an image. |

| ''...Screenshot Contest of OTHER video games ...'' - THANK YOU.
As for the judges, I would gladly apply myself as I'm rather indifferent to different games as I love them all. Except for Sims....I hate Sims from the bottom of my soul. However, even then I wouldn't prioritize a Dragon Age screenshot over one from Sims because it doesn't make any sense to damage someone's chances of winning because of my game preference.
I'm also well familiar with a lot of games that can be modded and can spot them at first glance.
My cons would be that I'm not as well known on forums as it might be desired of a judge and if I find a screenshot that excels in certain areas I might intentionally overlook a lesser flaw because my general standpoint in life (and therefore artistic standpoint as well) is that nothing is perfect and desperately striving for perfection can will ruin your goal.
Also for what it's worth, I'd love to see Hulks as a judge, because we're all well aware he's willing to put a lot of effort into these competitions. |

| I won't mind taking a gander on people's works of art and judging them. I'm always tweaking my ENB since I want my Fallout to be visually appealing. I've always been fascinated at art since I was a child and I aspired to be an artist during elementary school. Scenic views are one of my favorites to look at and I take tons of photos when I'm trips. _________________ Be My Friend! Earn ACHIEVEMENTS! |

| If its going to be an October/Halloween sort of thing, the theme should be something spooky or creepy IMO. So like creatures, atmospheric night-time shots, etc.
As for number of pics, I think three is a good number. Its enough for some variety, without being excessive - and I think it should be the maximum, instead of a mandatory number. Sometimes I'll take a couple dozen screenshots during a playthrough and only end up liking one or two of them. |

| alright fair point I figured a good theme would be "Vehicles from non-racing games" like the Normandy N7 from Mass Effect or the roller from Borderlands but you may be on to something with the Halloween thing... hmm... haven't looked at it that way. we'll make a list and settle on the most popular
also, I agree with 3 pics/person when I made the count mandatory, it was easier to verify the vote count at the end of the contest but since we don't have mass voting anymore, we could go with an amount that's just a maximum limit, so that people can post under it, with one or two pics, if they don't have 3 if nobody else says any different, we'll go with that then
Theme suggestions: Vehicles (in non-racing games) Spookiness/Creepiness (scary stuff)
Number of screenshots: 3 (max, but will also accept 1 or 2)
alright, then. how long should the submissions be open? a week, a month?
@BoomBewm - that's a silly question yes, screenshots from video games other than fallout or elder scrolls |

| Anything horror related would be interesting. Since all video games will be allowed (I hope i read the rules right) Silent hill, dead space, and other similar games could make for some interesting atmosphere. Vehicles seems like an OK idea, but I've played Forza and many other games like it, so maybe if we do a vehicle-related screenshot contest, we could allow some content from those games. Not a lot though. Wouldn't want submissions to be flooding with those. Maybe one suggestion from me: Depression. Sometimes in video games we hit a point in the story that can bring some of us to tears. Dom's death in Gears of War 3, the ending of The Last of Us, and other similar titles can really show how fantastic the storylines of games can be. Capturing these instances could really shed some light onto video games as a whole, and prove that they are not only for entertainment purposes, but can cause us to feel true, emotional pain for those little blips of pixels we call NPCs. Once again, just a suggestion. 3 pics seems appropriate. We wouldn't want 6 or more watered-down submissions, would we? Also, thanks for choosing me to help, DVAted. I look forward to working with you and Tesvixen on this contest. cheers! _________________ - Can you figure it out?:

| Gonna keep my suggestions short:
- 3 pics per submission - Theme: Gut wrenching moments in gaming. Can also be mixed with the spooky theme suggested above (for example silent hill is full of those) |

Don't mean to shoot you down Nem, but I personally dislike this suggestion. It forces the contest to revolve around specific, spoiler-ish moments that could ruin a number of games for people who haven't played them yet. If one of the screenshot entries is of <insert name of character> being ripped in half in <insert name of Resident Evil game> then we've just spoiled that game for anyone here who hasn't played it. Know what I mean? |

| I get what you guys are saying I just assumed the contest will be green lit for spoilers. It's gonna be a bit challening taking pics while dodging spoilers. Anyway, while writing this comment I had a sort of off-topic moment of inspiration - while not a screenshot it's a way to depress everyone who finished ME3 without spoiling it for the people that didn't : - Prepare to slit wrists:

| Ok. My first suggestion was way too specific. Here's a new one:
Easter eggs. We all love finding unique little hints to other franchises and games inside of our games, so why not exploit some more popular (Or less popular) Easter eggs in video games? _________________ - Can you figure it out?:

| Yeah. My first suggestion was a bit out there, i'll agree.
A poll would be good. I think it's always best to get others opinions first. Since we all added in our own suggestions, maybe it's time to get the community involved. _________________ - Can you figure it out?:

| will be fun to watch, only have a few cool pictures that I can share. So how do we submit a picture, I have a couple special ones-.-
but would not like to be confined to one area of what the screen shots have to be horror, commedy, fps, whatever. _________________ AAA Environment Artist & Modeler, US Army Combat Vet, Full Sail University Alumni
