For our first two playthroughs, we usually play the disciple of Jesus Christ archetype or the morally good asshole. We usually do the morally right thing and are seen as the beacon of hope. We're the goody two shoes! But after those few playthroughs, we decide to play a character that is just evil, the scum of the Earth. In this case for Fallout, we get the chance to do some of the evilest, most heartless shit in gaming. I am talking about blowing up settlements full of innocent people, selling people to be enslaved, doing legitimate acts of terrorism, and even good ol' cannibalism!
What I'm asking my fellow GUNers is what makes an evil playthrough very enjoyable for you? Is it the roleplaying? Is it the wide array of choices you are given? Is it just that you're a bit coo-coo in the head? Let's talk.
EDIT: Also, if you want, you can bring up an evil or morally bad character that you played and your experience with that character.

I can't for the life of me play as an evil character lol I mean I'd do morally evil stuff only if it feels satisfactory and deserving

I tend to play as an evil character because i think most of the time is more fun, but sometimes is very hard for me to to be 100% evil! Like in the Fallout games for example, sometimes it's hard for me to choose the mean conversation option because it makes me feel bad, but then after 2 minutes i have no problem cutting that same person in pieces and stealing all of his/her stuff. I'm just weird like that.

I only play an evil character because its the only way to see the best the game has to offer in terms of challenge and difficulty, I enjoyed slaughtering the ncr soldiers with my over powered sword I made. I enjoyed blowing the brotherhood of steel and the enclave because fuck them both to fuck in fallout 3 and in fallout 4 if there were an option I would destroy both the brotherhood again institute and the annoying neighborhood watchmen.

A perfect and important evil play through for me is the choices I get to make. Sure, murdering innocent people is fun and all, but doing a quest and making evil decisions is the best because there's a lot more harm you can cause than simply killing people. Framing Heck Gunderson for murdering his son during Beyond the Beef, blowing the Rail Line at Camp Mccarran, letting Rex die of his condition, selling Arcade into slavery, ripping a teddy bear in half in front of a little girl, all sorts of wicked things. But I'd rather do the good things in New Vegas than the cause harm.

@Osaldo But wouldn't letting Caesar die be good thing? Even siding with the Legion, I'd imagine letting him die be good thing since Ulysses said that if Caesar died, the Legion would fall apart because they follow him, not his ideals. Saving him would allow the Legion to continue much longer until its inevitable collapse.

In my opinion, evil walkthroughs are fun because you can throw all caution to the wind, and be like. SCREW THESE GUYS I AM OUT FOR ME. It allows you to go the road less travelled with a majority of players, who will always try and get the good endings for certain groups. With an evil play through you dont care and only go for the decision that best benefits you. You want more money, go and take it. You cant care less about this kids mother being killed, kick him in his stupid face. Whoops, looks like someone in MEGATON looked at you wrong. Better blow up his entire town and leave no survivors. Dont get me wrong, Its fun being the good guy, but its so much more fun to go around and not give a shit about anyones problem but your own. If I may put it in song? :

One that doesn't judge me for doing something bad :/ Its the main reason why I rarely go for an evil playthrough. The Karma System keeps reminding me that I lost a karma or some shit. I wish they just let the karma points be hidden within the pipboy.

I am actually in the middle of a evil play through right now. But I'll say it is really hard for me to play a evil character. It's not natural for me. I've played through so many good guys that I wanted to attempt a evil one. I am playing TTW and I helped Precedent Eden poison the water, I turned on the brotherhood and destroyed the citadel, blew up megaton. Worked with the powder gangers and helped them take over goodsprings. I'm even being nice to the fiends. Can't say it's been fun, but has been interesting. To much crime and destruction to turn back now LOL but my first instinct is to kill fiends, raiders, and gangers.

What makes an evil play through so enjoyable for me is the fact that I can feel like I can do whatever I want and not care what will happen oh you have a unique gun? sorry youre not an essential npc it's mine now lol.

Well, I usually play neutral-good character, but when I do evil things, it's only for two reasons : money and revenge.

I think when it comes to Developing RPGs, there is one key thing you have to keep in mind when making sure that a playthrough is enjoyable for the player, specifically, an evil playthrough.
For the developers, what they have to keep in mind is that to make any type of playthrough enjoyable, they have to give the player dynamic choices/options and make it fun. As a developer, you’re gonna have to make sure that the choices you give the player are impactful, whether it is Big or small. In this case for evil characters, the player would want to make a choice that would reflect on their character’s morality. Maybe near the end of a quest where you have to help one of two factions, you have three choices that would effect the ending of the quest. The first choice benefits the first faction, the second choice benefits the second faction, and the third choice benefits you, only you. The third choice would give the maximum(and probably best) reward for that quest, but it would result in screwing over those two factions, and for what gain? Personal gain. Now this seems pretty bare bones, but for RPGs like Fallout where multiple dynamic choices are important, the developer has to keep this in mind. You have to create dynamic choices that would work for different player characters.
So if I want to play an evil character, I better have choices that reflect on my oh so beautiful personality. Do I want to be an manipulative and cunning evil genius? Give me choices that would reflect that. Do I want to be a destructive, brutish warlord that takes what (s)he wants and doesn’t really care for other people? Give me choices that reflect that. This, I believe is the key thing to making an evil(or any type, for that matter) playthrough enjoyable. You are given choices that reflect your character’s personality.

I'm a simple guy, as long as I get to decapitate or blast a courier or annoying npc in the head I'm happy, though I tend to do that in every kind of playthrough. Guess I usually play grey.

Personally, I like to be as evil as possible until I reach the end of the story, then start following a redemptive path, or alternatively, be a hero of the people and turn heel. It adds a great form of depth and development to my characters and is just much more immersive to not follow a specific archetype. When my characters do turn heel, I have them do something that isn't exactly good but morally grey, like the Tenpenny Tower quest or Institute quests. I justify it by traumatising my character into adopting quite nihilistic views of the wasteland, developing them from a naive Vault Dweller/Wastelander into a complete prick.
However, playing a completely evil or good character is just boring because there's no diversity in choices and your character gets extremely predictable. Being completely evil is fun, but hard to roleplay, at least for me. There's no deep philosophical or ethical reason why your character is such a dick, and on the other hand, being a completely good character is boring because you're every NPC in the game's lapdog.
The stuff I find the most fun about being evil is the fact that you're this unstoppable entity that crushes any and all in it's wake. Some Nazeem looking guy in Whiterun insults you? Oh, that's fine, just pull out my Wabbajack and turn him into a block of cheese. Some Colin Moriarty tells you he won't give you information on your Father, well just let me put my fusion pulse charge on that nuclear bomb over there and turn Megaton into a fireworks display. That'll teach him!

What really makes it good is going through settlements like little lamplight with a sledge hammer, bloody mess and a child killer mod.

I have to agree with Corvo that playing Morally great vs playing straight Good or Evil is probably the most satisfying. It can become more organic. I've never played Evil. The games aren't really set up to provide the consequences and weight you should feel after making evil choices or doing evil things. I've rampaged through Megaton, Tenpenny Tower, Diamond City, Goodsprings many times; but it's not satisfying. Now if you murdered everyone in Goodsprings and the rest of game reacted to you because of it, such as dialogue, hostile npcs, bounty hunters, etc. Yes it would be satisfying because now there would be weight behind my actions. Traders won't trade with me, or charge higher prices....I could go on with ideas.
Fact is, though dynamically Fallout New Vegas had the better offering of consequences compared to Fallout 3 and Fallout 4, FNV itself still doesn't meet the bar required to make a evil playthrough truly satisfying.

I really wish that we'd been able to see a viable Legion settlement, like maybe Flagstaff-- I seem to recall that being mentioned as their capital. As it stands, they just seem to burn down everything. My evil courier playthroughs were still practical-minded, I've never done a "kill everything for the hell of it," and I still wanted a wasteland worth living in. For such a dangerous, violent, selfish courier, ruling Vegas simply looked better. Now if we'd actually seen what the legion was capable of, a harsh but ordered town, safe for those who did as they were told, then maybe it would have felt more practical to be evil. But... we had Nipton. After all these years, I've still never done a legion game straight through. I'd also have liked to see what the NCR was capable of -- their best cities are probably worth looking at and comparing to Vegas, but that's another topic for another day.

I always play as a morally sound character in my games, so having an evil playthrough gives things a breath of fresh air. Although I will say that playing an evil character is much more satisfying in Fallout 3 than in New Vegas, in my opinion.

I always play games and make decisions as I would do in real life, which is a rational and moral character, aka Mr. Good guy most of the time.
Occasionally playing with the evil character brings the much needed variety to gameplay. It's fun sometimes just to be a real dickhead. It's more like roleplaying a villain of the story, who wins of course. Life isn't fair all the times, that sould be a theme for games and movies more often. I'm kind of tired of "hapily ever after" endings so I make my own in games if I'm allowed to do that.
